Job Details

The Sports Editor is responsible for overall direction and leadership of the local sports newsroom and its news gathering efforts, with a focus on building a loyal, engaged audience on each unique publishing platform.

Essential Functions
  • Direct and manage local sports news gathering and editorial functions for the newsroom on all relevant publishing platforms.
  • Establish an agile news operation with workflows organized around timely, digital publishing.
  • Drive reader loyalty by focusing on audience needs and interests; employ journalistic practices that facilitate community conversation and participation.
  • Build newsroom skills and performance expectations around use of new and emerging digital tools; promote the consistent use of alternative content formats and publishing tools that will help reach new audiences.
  • Be a player-coach with a hands-on leadership style, demonstrating strong journalism values, creativity and agility.
  • Create and maintain a healthy workplace that values candid communication, clear expectations, respect, inclusion, innovation and urgency.
  • Play an active role in the company’s growth strategies, working collaboratively with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals.
  • Communicate weekly or as needed with FCC content teams and collaborate regularly on content projects with FCC state and regional teams.
  • Communicate story/ visual plans for the print edition to relevant production teams to ensure a high-quality publication that meets all deadlines.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communication or related field.
  • Newsroom and editing experience preferred.
  • Five years of related newspaper experience.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is insurable by the company.
  • Must carry an acceptable level of vehicle insurance as required by the company.
  • Knowledge of supervisory rules and policies.
  • Knowledge of AP Style, the Freedom of Information Act and open meeting laws.
  • Exceptionally strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Able to multitask and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Ability to effectively direct and present information to employees and management.
  • Ability to promote teamwork and interdepartmental cooperation.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to increase online reporting and grow a digital audience.
  • Passionate approach to producing strong community journalism and incorporating enterprise reporting.
  • Follow best practices and ethics of responsible journalism.

The Herald was launched June 26, 1879, more than 10 years before North Dakota and South Dakota were granted statehood. In 1929 the Herald was purchased by the Ridder family and M.M. Oppegard. In 1974 the Ridder group of newspapers merged with Knight Newspapers to form Knight Ridder then in 2006, was purchased by Forum Communications Company. Although the Herald is based in North Dakota, a large percentage of readers live in Minnesota. The Herald includes Minnesota as well as North Dakota in any stories that gauge the regional impact of national and international news. The paper circulates in 8 counties of northeastern North Dakota and in 6 counties of northwestern Minnesota. It’s delivered across the upper Red River Valley, with a primary circulation area stretching from Rugby, N.D. to Bemidji, Minn., the Canadian border to Hillsboro, N.D.
