We are seeking a motivated individual with strong instrumentation and controls experience to join our team as a Control Systems Engineer at the Crookston factory. The purpose of this position is to identify, recommend, and implement control and instrumentation changes to increase factory throughput and sugar recovery in addition to reducing processing costs. Optimize current automation of factory operations and assist in needs assessment, analysis, recommendation, development, and installation of future factory automation capital projects.

The principal accountabilities of these positions include, but are not limited to:

• Designs instrumentation and control systems; develops the electrical design for batch and continuous process controls, specifications for process instrumentation, VFD, and control valves. Develops control systems documentation, including Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), loop wiring diagrams, specifications, manuals, PLC programs, and HMI configuration. This position works with OPC communication between factory and business systems and industrial device networks.
• Researches and recommends methods to enhance the utilization of automation and computer control systems. Consults with the Factory Engineer and/or Process Engineer on capital process improvements and make appropriate recommendations and program changes. Also consults with the Maintenance Engineer and Electrical & Instrumentation Supervisor regarding the maintenance of control systems and Process Engineers to achieve optimum processing efficiency. Provides technical expertise in the maintenance of control systems.
• Oversees the optimization of current controls systems and ensures systems are finely tuned and working at optimum levels. The automation of factory operations involves participation in the needs assessment analysis, recommendation, development, and installation of future factory automation capital projects. These are key responsibilities.
• Oversees the support of PLC and process control systems.
• Works with the factory maintenance and other engineers to analyze, recommend equipment specifications and selection, install new equipment, recommend process improvements, and debug processes. Evaluates projects and equipment to determine life cycle benefits and return-on-investment.
• Provides general control systems and instrumentation training for factory employees to effectively prepare factory personnel to successfully operate electrical, instrumentation, and control equipment.
• Assists with the startup of the factories and often have involvement in numerous projects with multiple contractors and factory labor which finish just before factory startup.
• Operates within budget and schedule; completing capital jobs on schedule to allow for factory start-up is critical.

To be successful in this position requires knowledge of instrumentation and electronic controls typically gained through the completion of a Bachelor's degree in electrical or control engineering or computer science. Knowledge and prior industrial experience in Delta V, industrial networking and device networks, AutoCAD and other computer drafting and design software, computer programming, process modeling, and control systems programming is desirable. The position requires strong project management skills and excellent communication skills (both written and verbal). The incumbent must be able to prioritize and organize work to control his/her schedule and make necessary decisions or sacrifices to facilitate the startup of factories on time, within his/her reasonable ability to control events.
