This is a part-time non-benefited position.

Description & Details:

The ND 4-H Camp is on 80 acres of wooded riverfront property 1.5 miles west of Washburn, ND. This property provides life-changing experiences to youth, memorable experiences for those who rent the property for various events, and offers a year-round opportunity to enjoy it in any season. This position is essential to support of the needs, mission and vision of the North Dakota 4-H Foundation as property owner and NDSU Extension Staff; part-time staff, volunteers and partners who conduct educational programing on the 4-H Foundation Camp Property.

This position includes responsibility for carrying out the same responsibilities for non-camp uses during other times of the year. A high degree of autonomy and self-directedness is required due to other limited part or full-time staff working on-site during the year. The performance of these responsibilities contributes to fulfilling the mission of providing desired comfort, convenience, and hygiene of personnel and camp guests and to the upkeep and care of buildings, facilities, and grounds of the property.

This is a 1/3 time or approximately 13 hours a week, 12-month non-tenure track position with the ND 4-H Foundation, in partnership with NDSU Extension; some evening and weekend work is required with no acquired overtime. This position is jointly responsible to the Center for 4-H Youth Development and the ND 4-H Foundation. This individual reports to the Center for 4-H Youth Development Assistant Director with input from the ND 4-H Foundation. The office will be located at the ND 4-H Camp in the Johnsrud building. The position is supported by office staff from both departments.

Responsibility for the Work of Others:

Responsible for ensuring that contracted or hired personnel carry out the duties/functions following all essential guidelines, policies, and rules; NDSU Extension, ND 4-H Youth Development, and ND 4-H Foundation procedures, record-keeping and expected behaviors.

Salary: $25,000/year

Operating Budget: $100,000 year - working with the 4-H Foundation Camp Facilities Committee and 4-H Foundation Manager to manage this operating budget.

This position includes, but it is not limited to, the following responsibilities:
  • Skills in community-based relationship building, stakeholder management, fundraising and volunteer coordination. The key objective is to nurture meaningful relationships with key community groups.
  • General knowledge and skills in building maintenance, including the areas of plumbing, lighting/electrical and basic carpentry including repair techniques.
  • Knowledge of custodial tasks and ability to plan work, schedule or conduct the work, and communicate or otherwise instruct others.
  • Knowledge of chemical and cleaning solvents used in dealing and sanitizing facilities and their safe use in a public setting.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to safely operate several types of electrical and fuel powered equipment related to custodial, grounds and maintenance work (tractors, chain saws, lawnmowers, floor cleaners, etc.)
  • Diagnostic skills in identifying major maintenance malfunctions and ability to communicate problems to experts who can assist with resolving the problems, and communicating these issues to a supervisor to maintain awareness and solutions considered.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures and the ability to conduct inspection and to implement the procedures.
  • Ability to plan work, assign tasks and adequately supervise satisfactory completion of the task by other part-time custodial, grounds and maintenance worker(s).
  • Ability to work harmoniously with staff, community partners and others.
  • Ability to be self-directed with adaptability and flexibility to perform and assign work within changing priorities and interruptions.


Responsibility 1:

Special Events and Camp Rentals: Work with the 4-H Foundation Manager and the Camp Facility Chair relative to special events and camp rentals on the property. As needed, communicate with the State 4-H Activities Coordinator who also uses camp facilities to meet the needs of youth development opportunities. Carry out pre- and post-event responsibilities including documentation required for insurance, risk management and safety purposes. Maintain a local record and forward the documentation to the appropriate parties (as described in the Camp Rental Procedures) for billing, and reporting purposes. Work with other part-time custodial, and maintenance staff and independent contractors as determined to fulfill the mission of the camp and the purpose of this position.

Responsibility 2:

Supervision: assign, train and evaluate other seasonal, part-time staff tasked with care and keeping of the facilities and may include but not be limited to mowing and other grounds/custodial activities. Serve as the local point of contact for and supervise while on site any other custodial, grounds and maintenance services conducted on the property including related business vendors (water, garbage, sewer/septic system, electrical, phone, pest control). Working closely with the State 4-H Activities Coordinator regarding Camp Improvement Days in the spring and fall to ensure and coordinate work that can be competed by those attending 4-H Camp Improvement Days as volunteers are not completed by paid individuals.

Responsibility 3

Building(s): Operation, Inspection and Property Management: Contact the appropriate resources, such as: Foundation Manager, State Specialist, State 4-H Activities Coordinator with Camp Program responsibility, to secure approval, or to conduct the work needed which might include vendors for food, supply and other deliveries related to the operation of the facility and program. Inspect designated areas, buildings, and equipment for proper sanitation, safety, security, and needed maintenance and improvement. Acquire a minimum of three bids if necessary and communicate potential expenses to Camp Facilities Chair. Maintain items like fire extinguishers, water heaters for proper temperatures, and other items related to health and safety inspections.

If task cannot be done using the self-developed skills of this individual hired for this position, this position may hire personnel within provided budget to assist with custodial, grounds or maintenance needs identified in a satisfactory way which might include but not be limited to mowing, trimming, lawn care, pest management, watering, tilling, fencing, and cutting firewood. Work together with and/or assist with electrical, plumbing and carpentry improvements and repairs as determined appropriate, needed and/or approved. If work is not completed, in an effort to ensure tasks are finished this position will be responsible for covering any necessary tasks that are unfulfilled.

Responsibility 4:

Equipment Operation: Oversee the operation of a variety of equipment including major kitchen equipment; building equipment including furnaces, air conditioning, ventilation systems, fire alarms, etc.; tractors, loader-tractors, power mowers, power chain saws and other general use equipment related to the management of the property. Evaluate equipment effectiveness and recommend purchases and replacement. Oversee or perform preventive and routine maintenance of equipment. Maintain equipment records as requested/required. Make minor repairs on equipment and buildings.

Supply Management: Maintain inventory, order, and distribute supplies related to custodial, grounds and maintenance responsibilities. Work with vendors for delivery, storage and proper use of supplies utilized. Work with other vendors who access the property for food, health, safety, and other purposes. Work with camp staff for items from vendors that provide supplies for more than one purpose i.e., food and janitorial supplies.

Special condition(s): Work with the Foundation Manager, the Center for 4-H Youth Development Staff, the Chair of the 4-H Foundation Facility Committee to prepare an annual budget request related to operation and maintenance of the 4-H camp. This budget will be submitted for consideration to the 4-H Foundation based on the annual budget cycle identified. Expenditures more than the approved budget requires pre-approval.

Time Management:
  • The ability to properly manage time to stay within the 1/3 time or approximately 13 hours a week . Acknowledging that over the 12-month period December and January will have very minimal hours worked, balancing summer hours across the year.
  • Time spent representing the 4-H Foundation at community/local meetings must support the mission and vision of the 4-H Foundation directly providing a benefit back to the purpose of the 4-H Camp. Otherwise, time spent in meetings that does not directly support the ND 4-H Camp mission and vison cannot count as hours worked.
  • Be self-directed with minimal supervision and work flexible hours.
  • Be able to budget funding for hired personnel effectively and efficiently.

Work Schedule:

13 hours per week

Advertised Pay:

$25,000 annually

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED; and/or 4 years of experience related to responsibilities.
  • Experience with mechanical, electrical, pluming and other facility and maintenance, grounds, and property management.
  • Experience in collaborating as part of a team for a diverse audience of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including oral, written and listening skills.
  • Experience effectively using technology to accomplish good communication as necessary.
  • Experience working with minimal supervision, including prioritizing workloads to meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with various ethnic and socioeconomic audiences, an interest and ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds, and a commitment to the principles of diversity.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supervising others.
  • Experience working with rental contracts.
  • Record of successful partnerships.
