The VP, Controller and Chief Accounting Officer is responsible for ensuring the integrity of all financial accounting and reporting, internal control environment, tax planning and compliance functions for Northwestern Mutual and affiliated companies, including separate accounts, sponsored mutual funds, broker/dealer and wealth management subsidiaries.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct and lead teams on reporting the financial condition of the Company, as well as all statutory reporting requirements and Model Audit Rule internal control compliance.
  • Leads department that maintains the books of the Company, directs the development of procedures in the Home Office, and prepares annual and interim financial statements and reports.
  • Leads/implements Company tax policy, directs tax compliance, works with legislative/regulatory bodies.
  • Participate in pivotal decisions as they relate to strategic initiatives and operational models within the finance business.
  • Ensure adherence to accounting principles, policies, and standards while simultaneously ensuring quality and reliability in a cost-effective manner.
  • Enterprise liaison for external rating agencies.
  • Key financial intermediary with the NM Audit Committee and NM Sr Leadership Team.
  • Develop processes and people while implementing technology solutions that are supportive of creating an accounting organization that is scalable for future growth.
  • Develop, recruit, and retain top talent within the controller team. Coach and develop others, create high performing teams, and gain a reputation as a talent multiplier.
  • Foster a results-orientation and business partner mindset within the Controllership organization. Includes a focus on communication, problem resolution, and providing appropriate feedback.
  • Continue to shape and structure the Controllership organization so that it is a highly effective and efficient function that will excel in a fast-paced environment.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration with Accounting emphasis.
  • Certified Public Accountant.
  • Minimum of fifteen years in progressively responsible experience in insurance accounting, auditing and/or financial management.
  • Background in the financial services industry and experience working in an environment of fast-paced change that requires the ability to move the department forward while also delivering on day-to-day commitments.
  • Experience with application of both statutory and GAAP accounting/reporting standards.
  • Highly analytical.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Proven leadership in people and project management.

Location: Full-time in Milwaukee or Open to Current New York residents working out of New York Office and 50%+ travel to Milwaukee.

Compensation Range:

Pay Range - Start:

$231,000.00

Pay Range - End:

$330,000.00

Please note that this is the standard pay structure. Positions in certain locations (such as California) may provide an increase on the standard pay structure based on the location.
