Education: Bachelor's Degree

Qualifications: Must have or be eligible for a North Dakota teaching license in Special Education. Special Education Strategist credential required. Master's degree in visually impaired or be able to obtain a certificate for visual impairment.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Knowledge of the UEB Braille code, Nemeth code, use of technology specific to visual impairment, basic orientation and mobility skills, daily living skills, cortical visual impairment, expanded core curriculum, and how to serve students with a variety of visual impairments is preferred.
  • Be able to complete functional vision evaluations and determine needs of students with low vision or blindness.
  • Serve students ages 3 through 21 years old.
  • Requires good organization and time management skills.
  • Good oral and written communication skills are critical.
  • Serve on a number of teams so the ability to work with a variety of colleagues is extremely important.
  • Collaboration skills in terms of writing IEP's and other special education documents is an essential skill as well.
  • The ability to be flexible, creative and have a child centered attitude and approach are required to be successful in this position.
  • Must be able to drive between schools to serve students.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Work Environment and Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionally walk and stand. The ability to hear and see in order to communicate effectively as well as communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Maintain effective audio/visual discrimination and perception to the degree necessary for the successful performance of assigned duties; Maintain mental capacity, allowing for effective interaction and communication with others. Occasionally may need to lift up to fifty (50); reaching, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling within the classroom.

    The employee may encounter situations where students are physically aggressive and/or verbally abusive. This may require physical interaction (using strategies acquired through de-escalation and restraint training) between the employee and student. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person. May be directly responsible for the safety, well-being and/or output of students.

    Terms of Employment: 188 days contract

    Evaluation: By the Principal at least twice each year in the first three years of service (December 15 & April 15), and at least once each year thereafter (April 15).
