Position Information

Responsibilities as the Physiology Lab Coordinator:
  • Conduct research projects and related activities in support of various research grants and programs of faculty members within the physiology group of faculty associated with the Center for Nutrition and Pregnancy, and the Department of Animal Sciences.
  • Analysis and publication of the results of experiments.
  • Overseeing and coordinating all activities in the physiology laboratory.
  • Managing a laboratory budget which includes, but is not limited to, supplies, equipment costs and user fees.

Conduct or assist with laboratory analyses as needed by the physiology group:
  • Design and conduct experiments related to grants and other programs, including the development of new procedures and methodologies.
  • Updating, optimizing and implementing new research methods.
  • Aid in the pursuit of extramural funding (including grant writing) in support of research related to the ongoing activities and projects stemming from grants.
  • Other responsibilities as they arise in the areas of research, teaching, and service as they are assigned.

Additional responsibilities the Physiology Laboratory Coordinator is expected to do:
  • Perform all responsiblities in a timely fashion according to the timelines established in conjunction with PIs
  • Acquire and maintain expertise in the use of software/hardware related to laboratory procedures
  • Maintain a daily activity log including planned activities in calendar format
  • Maintain and service all equipment in their primary area(s) of responsibility
  • Maintain an electronic log/inventory with dates of all sampes and experiements that have been completed or are in process of completion that is available to PIs via the internet
  • Maintain an electronic copy of all protocols, and make it available to PIs via the internet
  • Help prepare experiment protocols, grants, and manuscripts, in concert with PIs
  • Assist in planning and implementation of experiements, in concert with PIs
  • Train undergraduate and graduate students, as well as other scientists, in protocols and experimental procedures
  • Stay current in their areas of technical expertise, including attending training workshops/meetings as needed and as dependent on availability of funds
  • Order and maintain supplies and reagents for their respective coordinating area(s)
  • Develop and optimize methods for continued excellence of the program
  • Assist as needed, in other coordinating areas and laboratory activities to enable the timely completion of work and sample collection/processing, storage, preparation, and assays and to ensure the continued excellence of the program
  • Assist in coursework; e.g., in the set up for and conduct of laboratory courses and exercises
  • Occasionally work outside of normal university hours, as needed
  • Other related duties and responsiblities, as needed

Laboratory Supervisor. Manage and supervise (in coordination with faculty supervisor) all activities of the areas associated with the physiology research group.
  • Train and assist with other personnel in various state-of-the-art methodologies in the Physiology Laboratory including molecular biology, protein chemistry, cell culture, histology/immunohistochemistry/in situ hybridization, gene cloning, real-time PCR, RNA isolation, bioinformatics, in vitro embryo fertilization, and related methodologies.
  • Training and advising of undergraduate and graduate research and research scientists in the areas described above as well as collaboration with researchers in activities related to grants
  • Supervising undergraduate and graduate students and other personnel as needed

Work Schedule: Full-time, 12-months

Advertised Salary: $50,400/year

Minimum Qualifications:
  • MS in physiology, cell, or molecular biology, or related areas
  • Experience in managing a multi-user laboratory
  • 6 years of related lab work experience in physiology, cell and molecular biology, or related field. Experience with the design and execution of physiology experiments utilizing animal models, data collection, and laboratory analyses.
  • Current valid driver's license
