The primary function of this position is to provide technical and team leadership through coaching and mentorship, act to enable the team to be as accurate and efficient as possible, and ensure code accuracy and consistency while keeping the team moving forward with new industry developments in code and user experience standards. The lead developer ensures that departmental standards and principles are communicated throughout the team and are actively enforced and is the go to person when team and cross-department members need assistance.

Essential Responsibilities:
  • Develop, maintain and regulate code and user interface design standards for all personnel publishing to the website.
  • Be the one source of the truth (regulator) for all things happening with the site and have the final say on UX matters when manager is not present.
  • Encourage creative development and participation within the team and help to formulate that creativity into projects that benefit the team objectives.
  • Act as example to all web team members by being the person who most closely follows the principles and practices we have committed to.
  • Collaborate cross departmentally to plan, design, develop, test and maintain projects and technologies; ensure consistency with brand and code standards. Guide team development efforts towards successful project delivery including scope and deadlines.
  • Administer peer-reviews of solution designs and related code.
  • Provide technical leadership to teammates through coaching and mentorship; train on better ways of doing things and help team members to improve their skills; oversee training and setup for new hires.
  • Be the point person for the development team when site issues arise; assist in troubleshooting efforts and delegate duties as necessary to return the site to stable conditions.
  • Maintain and update departmental standards and principles documentation and ensure all team members understand and are actively producing work to those standards so that work is done to the highest possible quality; prepare reports, manual and other documentation as necessary.
  • Research new technologies for the team; make recommendations regarding hardware and software upgrades to management; work with management to keep systems updated and functional; set the technical direction for the team.
  • Guide team development efforts towards successful project delivery including scope and deadlines.
  • Identify and encourage areas for growth and improvement within the team.
  • Delegate and troubleshoot opportunities as they arise.
  • Review customer feedback touch points within the company and utilize with optimization efforts.
  • Develop with the user in mind; produce new and refresh outdated design and code for a variety of Swanson affiliated websites and materials as well as formulate initial design ideas for multiple projects
  • Ensure all front-end code touched is current, clean and bug free and complies with the Swanson responsive design and performance standards; maintain related documentation as necessary.
  • Gather requirements around functionality and translate those requirements into elegant functional solutions; build wireframes, mock-ups, prototypes, etc. as needed as tech scoping stage of projects.
  • Work with a team to develop project plans and ensure projects are completed within scope and deadlines; formulate a creative plan for meeting goals and expectations.
  • Communicate with management to fully understand desired direction on current and future projects. Regularly update team with project status.
  • Design html prototypes, visual interfaces and interaction of web-based applications maintaining a consistent look in line with established Swanson branding, infrastructure and SEO efforts.
  • Stay abreast of w3 standards, new software and web innovations in the industry.
  • Speak your mind in a supportive forum and respect the opinions of others; actively seek out innovative solutions to solve web-related business problems.
  • Ensure integrity of overall look and feel of website across all marketing channels (desktop, mobile, tablet, print, email, etc.).
  • Work with team members to improve internal tools and make their lives easier.
  • Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with peers, management, and support resources, with a constant commitment to teamwork and exemplary customer service.
  • Conducts self in the presence of customers and community so as to present a professional image of SHP.

Competencies Required:
  • Deep understand usability best practices and methodologies and have a deep understanding of user-centered design principles as related to eCommerce
  • Relentless attention to detail, commitment to producing quality work, deadline conscious
  • An innate love of web development, design and al things that go with a world class eCommerce experience
  • Extensive experience with HTML, JavaScript, CSS (LESS) and Adobe CS
  • Extensive experience with JavaScript libraries and frond-end frameworks (jQuery, Bootstrap, etc.)
  • Experience with versioning and revision control software such as SVN and GIT
  • Understanding of cross-browser/platform issues and solutions
  • Ability to test own work and troubleshoot bugs
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills; ability to successfully communicate with all levels of management
  • Must be capable and comfortable multi-tasking between concurrent tasks with changing priorities and deadlines

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities, but will lead or direct the work of others.

Education and Experience Required: Bachelor's degree in Web Development or Web Programming with 3-5 years experience in a similar field, at least 1 year good standing on the Web User Experience team. Or; an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential responsibilities and duties of the job as listed above.
