The Medical Assistant functions within the administration pre-defined scope of practice guidelines. Ambulatory care is a unique healthcare setting that is characterized by efficient, focused care of patients. The Medical Assistant in the ambulatory care setting collects subjective and objective health status data from the patient or caregiver and communicates this data to the health care provider. The Medical Assistant participates in the care of patients by providing contributing data to licensed health care professionals. The Medical Assistant communicates the providers instructions for care to the patient, or caregiver, by transmission of specifically defined information. Will participate in care for patients, across the lifespan, in all phases of preventative care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up as patients move in and out of care settings. Performs a variety of duties under the direct supervision of a person licensed to practice medicine. A sampling of the specialized clinical duties performed includes, but is not limited to, obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for examinations, observing and reporting patient's signs or symptoms, and performing point of care testing.



South Dakota requires registration as a Medical Assistant with the South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners if practicing in South Dakota. Medical Assistants working in Minnesota and Iowa do not need to be registered as these states do not require registration. Possession of National Medical Assistant Certification required (CMA). Graduate of an accredited school of Medical Assisting. One year of clinical experience preferred.
