Assists in the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with pulmonary disorders; analyzes sputum, blood, and breath specimen collections along with lung capacity measurements of patients. May include collecting sputum, blood and breath specimens for diagnosis and analysis. Performs regular assessments of patients and the equipment they are using in order to adjust oxygen levels as needed. Analyzes patients' blood and other specimens to determine levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide and other gases. Measures the patients lung capacity to determine if there are any impairments. Offers diagnosis results and treatment suggestions based on the analysis of the patient.


Must have current Respiratory Therapy licensure in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state licensure privileges as required by position. Must have RRT credentials as attained through the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) within six months of employment and maintain active status according to NBRC credentialing requirements. Certification in Basic Life Support is required. Must obtain role specific specialty credential(s) such as NRP, ACLS, PALS, etc. within 6 months of hire into position and maintain credentials. A degree in Respiratory Care from an accredited respiratory care program is required; minimum associate degree or the equivalent. Respiratory Therapists must have a thorough knowledge and understanding of all procedures, indications, contraindications and hazards involved in respiratory care, as well as knowledge of equipment utilized in their department. The incumbent must be able to demonstrate the ability and knowledge required to utilize computers for patient documentation and data gathering for quality care.
