Deputy Director - Board of Technical Education
The Deputy Director of the South Dakota Board of Technical Education will join an organization focused on growing the professionally-skilled workforce, supporting the state's technical institutions, managing a variety of board operations and fostering positive relationships with elected officials and industry leaders. The successful candidate should exhibit strong abilities in strategic planning, communication, relationship building, and data management. The Board of Technical Education is in need of a Deputy Director who is able to build a rapport with the Executive Director, the four institution presidents and their leadership teams, and members of the board.
Background: The South Dakota Board of Technical Education began operations in the fall of 2017, after the passage of Amendment R and Senate Bill 65. The board consists of nine members, each appointed by the Governor's office and representing either industry or one of the four technical institutions. The Deputy Director will join the Executive Director as the primary staff members charged with advancing the mission of the board and managing day-to-day operations. The Deputy Director is expected to have a high-level of interaction with administrators, faculty and staff at the four technical institutions, the board members, leaders of industry, staff from other state agencies and elected officials.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Education: Earned bachelor's degree in education, communications, business or a related field. A master's degree in education, communications, public affairs, or a related field is preferred.
Experience: At least one year of professional experience in the field of education, communications, business, or a related field. Experience with strategic planning, leadership development, student success, assessment and project coordination preferred.
The Deputy Director will be expected to:
- develop system-wide reports (financial, placement, retention);
- build successful relationships with industry leaders and statewide decision-makers;
- serve as a liaison to administrative leaders at the four technical institutions ;
- process state-level payments to the four technical institutions (multiple times each year);
- collaborate with other individuals and organizations;
- assist with the preparation and execution of board activities (meetings, retreats, events);
- assist with the marketing and communication efforts of the board/system.
