Hiring Department:  Steam Plant- Facilities Management

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification:  $37,275/Annual, full-time, non-exempt, benefitted.

Work Schedule:  Rotating shifts, includes weekends/holidays. Subject to call-backs 24/7.
We are currently recruiting for two vacancies.

The Heating Plant Operator I is responsible for maintaining a uniform flow of steam by fueling a high pressure gas, coal, or oil boiler and maintaining all related equipment in the boiler room. 

Coal Handling/ Payloader Operation:

  • Operate and maintain coal conveyors, coal elevators, rail car shakers, car hoes, and other coal handling equipment. 
  • Operate and maintain pay loader for the transportation and stockpiling of coal and for the movement and placement of rail cars.


Ash Removal

  • Operate and maintain pneumatic ash system, ash hoppers, ash vibrators, ash silos and associated ash bag houses
  • Assist in Boiler Operation-assist in the firing of coal/oil/gas boilers. 
  • Operate boiler feed pumps, vacuum pumps, and transfer pumps. 
  • Adjust air flows and monitor fuel input and steam output utilizing an automated computerized boiler control system. 
  • Assist the shift and maintenance supervisors as needed or directed


Maintenance and Cleaning:

  • Clean, repair and conduct maintenance on gas, oil, and coal fired boilers and their associated equipment.  Includes fireside cleaning, waterside cleaning, and boiler tube turbining. 
  • Perform custodial services and painting throughout the steam plant


Record Keeping:

  • Make entries into a daily shift log, updating fuel usage and maintenance reports. 
  • Use of personal computer for maintenance records and data entry.  All other duties assigned.


Required Competencies:

  • Must have the mechanical aptitude and ability to learn the operation of high pressure coal/gas/oil fired boilers. 
  • Will use strong verbal and written skills, and be able to effectively communicate with team members. 
  • Will operate pay loader and other coal handling equipment.
  • Will work shifts, to include weekends and holidays.
  • Will work off scaffolding as high as 40 feet or more.
  • This position will lift objects in excess of 75 pounds, work in confined spaces, withstand long hours of standing, kneeling, bending, twisting, and work with hands overhead.
  • All Facilities Management positions are subject to call-backs 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.



Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Basic Mechanical Skills-experience operating basic hand tools and/or power tools.
  • One year experience in any of the following OR a combination of: industrial mechanical, boiler, OR equipment operating.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Employment offers are conditional based upon testing and ability to wear a full-face respirator.
  • Successful completion of a Criminal history background check.


In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the US and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire. 


Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Minnesota 2nd Class Engineer, Grade B license.
  • One year experience in operation of high pressure boiler.
  • Basic desk top computer skills.
