Position Description:
The Fire Technician will work within the goals and objectives set forth by the Fire Management staff within the Forestry and Fire Management Team and North Dakota Forest Service ( NDFS ). The primary responsibilities of the position are to supervise a seasonal firefighters and provide administrative support for crew member time sheets, travel and billing documentation. When fire response assistance is requested, the technician will respond to assist in fire suppression on both in-state and out of state fire emergencies. The position will assist the Fire Manager with providing training, developing courses, arranging for instructors, maintaining the NDFS fire vehicles, assisting in the management of the fire cache, recommending/ordering equipment, and training materials.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Associate's degree in Fire Science, Environmental, Natural Resource, Land-Use or Land Management Planning or related field, OR equivalent training and education to equal 2 years of college
  • Knowledge of wildland fire behavior
  • NWCG certified as a FFT1/ICT5 within 12 months of hire
  • NWCG Engine Boss certification within 24 months of hire
  • Demonstrated ability to consistently implement identified action items
  • Demonstrated ability to interact and collaborate with diverse groups and projects at multiple levels
  • Self-starter with the ability to follow through initiatives and projects to completion
  • Experience developing work schedules, completing time sheets and travel forms, and conducting interviews and performance evaluations
  • Experience leading personnel on both initial attack and large fire assignments
  • Valid ND Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Wildland Fire Management knowledge:
    general fire behavior, causes of fire influence of weather, topography and fuels on fire, and methods of extinguishing fire
  • Any other type of work, training, or knowledge that demonstrates the ability to perform the work of the position or familiarity with the subject matter
  • Ability to interpret policies, procedures, codes and standards
  • Knowledge of safety practices, ten standard fire orders, and eighteen "watch out" situations to prevent injury or loss of life
  • Computer experience, including Word Processing (MS Word), database management (MS Excel or Access), MS PowerPoint, and ArcView
  • Effective oral, written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking
  • Motivated, dedicated, outgoing, confident and ethical. Adaptable to change. Positive attitude
  • Ability to work safely and without direct supervision
  • Apply a fire hazard assessment system to a project and select effective mitigation strategies
  • Aptitude for GIS , GPS and related technology
  • Ability and desire to work as part of a team and with staff and partners.
  • Willing to travel alone, stay overnight and work in semi-rural areas
  • Organization, prioritization and time management skills

Physical Demands:
Successful completion of the Work Capacity Test at the Arduous Level annually.

Special Conditions:
Long distance, solitary travel required.
Wildland Firefighting Assignments:
Work is performed outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions.
Firefighters work under stressful conditions with exposure to smoke and heat.
Terrain is often steep and extremely uneven, with thick vegetation.
There is the presence of rolling burning material and rocks, and dead standing trees.
Work requires strenuous physical exertion for extended periods, including bending, stooping, walking, standing, climbing, and working in cramped positions.
Work requires lifting and moving heavy items.
Work requires the use of sharp tools in a crew environment.
Showers and hot meals may not always be available.
Work may be performed in isolation, and is often away from communities.
Night shifts are possible.
