Technical education/training in mechanical maintenance and/or applicable work experience to total four years. 

Relevant education/training may substitute for up to two years of experience. 

Must be able to follow detailed written work orders, plans and drawings.

Position may require the ability to walk or stand for the majority of the day: bend, climb, reach, kneel, carry, lift, push and pull 50 pounds or more.

Must have Minnesota Department of Health certified Water Supply System Operator, Class E employee license or ability to obtain within 6 months.

 

About the Job

   

This position is responsible for a wide variety of specialized and complex maintenance, repair and replacement for buildings and equipment.

Duties:

  1. Position is responsible for a wide variety of specialized and complex maintenance, repair and replacement for buildings and equipment.
  2. Preventative and complex maintenance such as daily inspection of hot water heating systems (small boilers) and low-pressure steam chillers.
  3. Replace filters, change belts, and lubricate/grease components. Cleans waste from fixtures up to and including P trap.  Balance fans and sheaves.  Replace bearings when needed for a variety of equipment including: water and air cooled compressors and vacuum pumps.  Install and remove window air-conditioning units.  Inspect and adjust controls of domestic heating and/or cooling systems.
  4. Troubleshoot and repair may include checking for blockage in steam, water, sewer and air vacuum lines and repair. Adjust and repair air handler components such as dampers, motors, fans sheaves and bearings, air cooled compressors and vacuum pumps. 
  5. Consults with project management (i.e. supervisor, Owner’s Representative, contractor) regarding specialized new construction or building upgrades to add scope and perspective based upon specialized knowledge and experience. Direct outside contractors when needed.
  6. Low voltage electrical equipment repair and replacement such as precision tools, wiring for work benches, space heaters, replacement of switch/outlet places, light bulbs and reset breakers.
  7. Oversee the operation of the sewage treatment facility, including seasonal flushing & monthly filter replacement.
  8. Perform monthly and annual inspections of smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and fire pump.
  9. Troubleshooting general building complaints such as air is hot/cold, faucet is leaking, door won’t close, electricity is off, etc. Troubleshooting may include checking for blockage in steam, water, sewer and air vacuum lines
  10. General building repair such as doors (knobs, hinges, latches, locks), Window screens, wall dents/holes, overhead doors, etc. auger drains, unclog toilets. Repair and replace bathroom accessories, flush assemblies, and faucet components when isolated by backflow preventer. Set up locks, rekeys and repair cores.
  11. Notify supervisor of building repairs that need specialized knowledge and skills.  Brief facilities management and/or outside contractors on the repair issues, when needed. Assist as needed.
  12. Assembles and repairs furniture, cabinets and cubicles. Hangs pictures, bulletin boards, and simple shelves.  May provide minor fabrication and soldering.
  13. Maintains and repairs small motors (electric) and engines (fossil fuel) such as cleaning equipment, snow blowers, back pack blowers, power sprayers, and compressors.
  14. May order standard supplies from vendor.
  15. Snow removal and other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Supervision:

May serve as a lead worker (e.g. assign, schedule, direct work) of University staff and student employees but are not PELRA supervisors. Supervisor is the Director of Operations.

** Position is represented by Teamsters Bargaining Unit. Dues or Fair Share deductions will be made. 

** Hourly Salary Range: $20.27 - $25.93

 

About the Department

The Cloquet Forestry Center (CFC) is part of the College’s Research and Outreach Center network, and serves as the primary research and education forest for the University of Minnesota. It is located two hours north of the St. Paul campus, and 30 minutes south of Duluth, MN. It is a regional hub for forestry research, undergraduate and graduate field instruction in natural resources, and extensive outreach and professional training programs.
