Job Details
To provide Speech Services to inpatients and outpatients. Focus will be on
assessment, consultation, and treatment. The person will also work on developing Speech Services.
• JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
A. REPORTS TO: Department Director B. SUPERVISES: As appropriate staff assigned or present in the area. C. INTERRELATIONSHIPS WITH: The Department Director and Rice Staff, Physicians,
patients and their families, other hospital health care personnel, other community agencies.
• HOURS OF WORK: 20 hours per week. Other hours may be worked as needed and via approval
from Department Director.
• DRESS CODE: Street clothes with lab coat and name tag as appropriate.
• ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK (Minimum qualifications necessary to functional at
full productivity).
A. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Masters in Speech Pathology B. EXPERIENCE: A minimum of clinical experience in treating children through geriatrics.
Prior experience in doing specialized testing preferred. C. JOB KNOWLEDGE: (Specific): The person must be able to function independently. She
must be able to follow doctor's orders, interpret, and carry them out. The person must be able to provide thorough evaluations, plan treatment, provide state of the art treatment programs and document in a clear, concise manner. The person must be able to relate to a variety of people and respond quickly to unexpected situations. Knowledge of growth and development, specifically an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process is needed. An understanding of the range of treatment that is needed and can be used by people of all ages in relation to the growth and development processes to include neonate, child, and/or adolescent.

• PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB: An ability to change position, and ability to and do close
visual activities. A need for fairly consistent alertness to patient needs and/or potential problem areas.
• PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB: Pleasant working conditions in a warm, well
lighted environment. Normally the noise level is constant and comfortable.
• EQUIPMENT OR MACHINES USED ON THE JOB: Equipment to do video fluoroscopy,
computer.
• MENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:
A. JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE: Person will make frequent independent decisions that are beneficial to the patient. They will do their own scheduling, treatment planning, and documentation. The person will budget his/her time in order to accomplish the varying tasks.
B. INDEPENDENT ACTION: The person will function independently in terms of patient
treatment. Administrative decisions will be in relation to the Department Director. C. EFFECT OF ERROR: When doing specialized testing minimal margin for error, in other
circumstances minimal error can be allowed. D. CONTACT WITH OTHER: With Nursing Staff, Physicians, other Rehabilitation areas,
consistent contact will occur.
• PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS AND AUTHORITIES:
A. RESPONSIBILITY: Per order and in accordance with established standards of performance, assesses, implements, evaluates, supervises and documents patient treatments. This includes infancy, early childhood, adolescents, adults, geriatrics and specialty areas of practice.
PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 55% DISCRETION: A
TASKS:
1. Assess standard speech tests to establish patient parameters 2. Administer, score and interpret specialized tests. 3. Establish plan, and execute patient's treatment program. 4. Consult with other staff and agencies in relation to the patient. AUTHORITIES: The person has the authority to function independently.
B. RESPONSIBILITY: To complete necessary record keeping activities in order to
communicate the patient's/client's status, to provide for proper billing, and proper record keeping.
PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 25% DISCRETION: A
TASKS:
1. Establish initial treatment plans based on evaluation results, per procedure.
2. Dictate the initial assessment per procedure. 3. Dictate routine progress notes per procedure. 4. Dictate discharge summaries per procedure. 5. Dictate, type or writes special reports per procedure. 6. Complete and turn in charge tickets for patients treated and/or equipment
prescribed. 7. Complete other patient related documents as initiated, and/or requested. AUTHORITIES: Employee has the authority to schedule their time in order to complete the above tasks.
C. RESPONSIBILITY: To consult with Department Director and other professionals in order to provide for effective patient and employee health.
PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 10% DISCRETION: A
TASKS:
1. Communicate with doctors, nurses, social workers, community agencies, families
and other care givers, and other people who have contact both in the hospital and outside of it.
2. Attend patient related meetings as needed. 3. Assist in developing specific speech services and provides education to internal
and external staff. AUTHORITIES: Employee has the authority to function autonomously in this area.
D. RESPONSIBILITY: To participate in meetings, in-services, and workshops in order to
increase knowledge in multiple areas of practice in Speech Therapy and to increase the persons of the organizations functioning.
PRIORITY: C % OF TIME: 8% DISCRETION: C
TASKS:
1. Attend monthly department meetings 2. Attend in-services and workshops as are appropriate. 3. Maintain education records and gives to Department Director when requested. 4. Read and act on communications entering the department and applicable to the
position. AUTHORITIES: Employee participates in this area after prior approval by the Department Director.
E. RESPONSIBILITY: To participate in Continuous Quality Improvement
TASKS:
1. Demonstrate understanding of the CQI philosophy. 2. Participate in CQI training activities or CQI teams if appropriate. 3. Demonstrate sensitivity to customers and their needs. 4. Interact appropriately with internal customers, i.e. coworkers within department,
staff across departments. 5. Interact appropriately with external customers, i.e. patients, families, medical
staff, vendors. 6. Role model positive behaviors.
