Job Summary:
This position is responsible for performing a wide variety of duties at the Itasca Biological Station and Laboratories, including but not limited to: grounds management, general maintenance and repair, carpentry work, HVAC and other duties as assigned.

Know and follow safety procedures and policies in everyday work and use protective equipment as required. Participate in team meetings and decisions within the work unit. Attend safety training sessions. Ability to keep motivated and work independently. Familiar with lawn equipment. Keep up on current building practices and components.

Required Qualifications:

  • Completion of vocational school in carpentry and 3 years of journeyman carpentry experience. 
  • Journey level work experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis.

Essential functions:

  • Grounds duties include but are not limited to: lawn mowing & trimming, tree trimming, removal & firewood processing, minor landscaping, tractor work for road maintenance and freight handling, snow removal.
  • Including but not limited to, fixing or replacing building components, periodical items like filters and batteries, light bulb change outs, adding salt to softeners.
  • Perform general carpentry work including but not limited to remodeling , roof repair, some painting, projects related to program needs (bird feeders, platforms, etc.) and storm related repair.
  • HVAC monitoring & data collection; Work on sewer and water systems to ensure safety of water uses, monitor Solar hot water and photovoltaic systems. Assist with station planning, including energy audits and sustainability practices. Other duties as assigned.

You will not be required to do licensed work in electrical, plumbing, and HVAC. External contracts may or may not cover some of this work when time or ability is not feasible.

Work hours are based on 40 hours/week. You will be required to work an average of 2 weekends per month.

** Position is represented by a Bargaining Unit: Teamsters. Dues or Fair Share deductions will be made. 
** Hourly Salary Range: $21.05 - $26.92 (DOQ)
