POSITION SUMMARY :
Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Facilities Planning and Management, this position functions as the Supervisor for Grounds Maintenance, supervising a team of Facility Maintenance Specialists, Gardeners, and an Auto Mechanic. This position oversees the maintenance and installation of all campus landscaping, flower and shrub beds, trees, turf and outdoor features. In addition, the position provides support for outdoor activities including student life, conferences, and events. This position directs seasonal maintenance of all sidewalks, streets and parking lots to ensure cleanliness and safety, including snow removal. This position is on call for emergencies and will call in other employees as needed.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

A. Supervision
*Direct the activities and effectively recommend the hiring, transfer, suspension, layoff, recall, promotion, evaluation and discipline of permanent, temporary, and student employees.
*Plan and assign duties to best meet the goals of the University.
*Review and distribute work requests.
*Perform all necessary paperwork, accident reports, vacation scheduling and assignment of tools, equipment and vehicles. Review and approve on-line employee absence and time entry.
*Establish goals and standards. Schedule and make inspections to ensure that these standards are met.
*Foster a positive work environment that encourages employee initiative and responsibility to best meet the needs of the University community.
*Direct the installation and maintenance of outdoor furniture, fixtures, features and signage.
*Direct the seasonal maintenance of sidewalks, streets and parking lots, including snow removal.
*Direct the operations of the auto shop and oversee the maintenance of fleet vehicles.

B. Administrative Duties
*Develop, review, and recommend equipment and supply purchases/specifications in cooperation with vendors per UW System and UWRF Purchasing guidelines.
*Develop, review, and oversee building envelope projects, including masonry tuck-pointing, exterior caulking and roof maintenance/repairs.
*Review plans for projects and assist with developing/recommend specifications.
*Maintain records regarding personnel, safety, supplies and preventive maintenance of equipment.
*Provide and/or arrange training as appropriate. Observe and ensure all safety measures, including training, is current and meets required standards.
*Participate and contribute in a positive manner with meetings, planning sessions and related activities at the work unit, departmental and University wide level.
*Monitor budget and recommend effective use of available resources.
*Coordinate with the Department of Natural Resources and the City of River Falls regarding storm water management and reporting for campus.
*Participate in the on-call emergency coverage for Facilities Management

C. Grounds Maintenance
*Operate Grounds vehicles and equipment, including mowers, loaders, trucks, tractors and attachments, forklift, plows, sanders, salters, hand tools and related equipment in support of seasonal grounds maintenance activities.
*Assemble, install, maintain and repair outdoor furniture (benches, picnic tables, park and outdoor recreation fixtures) and all other outdoor equipment and fixtures (bicycle racks, fencing and gates, retaining walls, etc.) as directed.
*Assemble, install and maintain outdoor signage.
*Maintain and perform repairs to irrigation and fountain systems, drainage systems, etc.
*Assemble, install, and maintain outdoor trash and recycling containers, and related duties.
*Read and interpret blueprints and drawings, assist crafts workers with higher level activities, including recommending products, procedures and maintain records of activities.
*Inspect, repair and perform preventative maintenance to sidewalks, streets, trails, parking lots and curbs. Pour and finish concrete and apply asphalt and sealers associated with these tasks. Work with vendors and contractors to successfully complete major projects.
*Inspect, repair and perform preventative maintenance of bleachers, outdoor sport surfaces (basketball courts, etc.) and other recreational facilities. Maintain records.
*Maintain turf, plants, trees, including mowing, weeding, planting, pruning, etc. including application of herbicides
*Collaborate with Falcon Center Operations supervisors and staff. Share equipment and resources to optimize the overall campus grounds operations.
*Develop plans and designs for exterior spaces in cooperation with staff.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Required:
*Ability to organize and delegate work to direct a variety of tasks and projects simultaneously.
*Ability to communicate effectively (oral and written) and the interpersonal skills necessary to interact with coworkers, supervisors, other staff and the public.
*Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, campus representatives, other agencies.
*Ability to successfully pass a Post-Offer Pre-Employment Screen.
*Ability to perform duties within extreme temperature ranges to accomplish necessary seasonal outdoor maintenance.
*Perform tasks requiring standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances to attend to assigned tasks and responsibilities.
*Ability to work outside of regular schedule for emergencies and special events; provide UWRF with contact information to be used in the event of an emergency and be willing to respond in a timely manner.
*Technical skill and dexterity to operate a variety of electronic equipment, including computer station.
*Ability to perform sustained and/or repetitive lifting of 50 lbs.
*Possess and maintain a driver's license that meets UW-Risk Management requirements to operate UW-River Falls Facilities Management vehicles and equipment.
*Possess or be willing to obtain Wisconsin Commercial Pesticide Applicator's license for Ornamental and Turf.
*Possess or be willing to obtain fork lift certification.

Preferred:
*An Associate's Degree or higher in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Turf Maintenance or related field from a recognized college, university or technical college is preferred.
*Knowledge of horticultural principles, equipment operation and maintenance, tools, methods, techniques and terminology used in the maintenance and installation of campus landscaping, features, snow and ice control.
*Knowledge of effective supervisory, problem solving, and leadership techniques required to supervise staff.
*Ability to organize, evaluate and present information effectively.
*Possess good communication and interpersonal skills, and exercise a strong sense of priority and time management.
*Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and the ability to implement an effective program.
*Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions needed to accomplish grounds maintenance work and equipment operation.
*Manual dexterity and mechanical skills to use, safely operate, and maintain grounds equipment and vehicles as well as hand and power tools in performance of assigned duties.
*Ability to read and understand operation manuals, technical drawings, blueprints and related documents.
