Instructor/Assistant Professor of Bass FY19

The University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Music is seeking an experienced teacher and performer for a full-time term Instructor/Assistant Professor of Bass/or other Wind Instruments, preference will be given to Double Bass. Starting date of the position is August 20, 2018.  Duties of this position are to teach applied bass or applied in the area of expertise, to a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate music majors, music minors, and non-majors; build and maintain a strong applied studio; direct UMD’s Jazz Ensemble II; teach courses in jazz improvisation, jazz combos, jazz writing, music industry, string techniques, and coach chamber music.   Other teaching assignments may include teaching graduate courses and other courses as appropriate to the candidate’s background and experience.  Service to the department is also expected which includes performing with the Faculty String and Faculty Jazz ensembles as well as assisting with departmental events such as the Head of the Lakes Jazz Festival and string honor events.

Required Qualifications: Essential qualifications for this position at the Instructor level include: a Master’s degree in music; successful experience teaching in an applied studio and other music courses at the collegiate level; a record of success in developing an applied studio; recognition and accomplishment as a jazz and classical performer; record of success working collaboratively with faculty colleagues; and a proven ability to support the University’s commitment to equity and diversity.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred qualifications at the Assistant Professor level include a completed Doctorate in Music; two years successful experience teaching applied bass, jazz/techniques courses, and directing ensembles (jazz and classical) at the collegiate level; recognition and accomplishment as a jazz and classical bass performer at the national level.
