Job Details

In the absence of the Director of Nursing Services and Clinical Directors,

provides leadership and direction to Nursing Service and administrative support to other hospital

departments on all night shifts, including weekends and holidays.


JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

A. REPORTS TO: Director of Acute Care Services/Care Management

B. SUPERVISES: NST's, Float Pool Staff; Nursing staff on scheduled shift.

C. INTERRELATIONSHIPS WITH: Ancillary department staff in absence of hospital

Administration.


HOURS OF WORK: Night shifts, Monday through Sunday; day shifts on weekends and/or

holidays.


DRESS CODE: Appropriate attire.


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK (Minimum qualifications necessary to function at

full productivity).

Administrative Nursing Supervisor 7251

A. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Currently licensed to practice nursing in the state of

Minnesota. Three or more years of successful nursing practice as a registered nurse.

BSN/BAN preferred. Management experience preferred.

B. EXPERIENCE: Has demonstrated progressive competence in areas of organization,

leadership, clinical practice, supervision, teaching, and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrates the ability to function and provide direction in stressful situations.

C. JOB KNOWLEDGE (Specific): Comprehensive clinical nursing knowledge, personnel

management and crisis management.

A knowledge of growth and development; specifically an understanding of the cognitive,

physical, emotional, and chronological maturation process. An understanding of the

range of treatment needed by patients of all ages in relation to the growth and

development processes to include neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric

patients.


BUDGET:


CLIENTELE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY JOB: All nursing, ancillary, and medical staff, public,

patients/families.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:

A. Frequent time is spent sitting when doing paperwork, using a computer terminal,

attending meetings.

B. Frequent time is spent when using a telephone

C. Various forward and sideways reaching, downward bending, carrying, lifting and

movements are required when responding to codes and/or assembling equipment.

D. Ability to move around outside in various weather conditions.


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB: Fair working conditions with frequent exposure to

disagreeable elements and danger.

PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS, AND AUTHORITIES:

A. RESPONSIBILITY: Management of Nursing personnel

PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 30% DISCRETION: A

TASKS:

1. Provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and

departmental goals and objectives.

2. Provides for the professional growth and development of the nursing staff

through an assessment of needs and appropriate actions (teaching, providing

for clinical exposure, facilitating educational programs).

3. Counsels employees when necessary initiating commendation and disciplinary

actions as indicated.

4. Conducts regular performance evaluations for permanent Float Pool staff,

including nurses, NUA's and NST's.

5. Performs staffing functions in accordance with departmental policy and

procedures.

6. Maintains effective communications with Director of Acute Care Services and

other Directors as well as Scheduling staff

7. Float Pool and NST staffing.

a. Schedules orientation for new Float Pool and NST staff.

b. Selects and hires appropriate staff for Nursing Float Pool and NST

group.

8. Maintains records of Float Pool and NST staff meetings, mandatory compliance

of licensure, training, education, etc.

1. Works with unit coordinators / charge nurses to promote effective unit

functioning.

2. Promotes safety through observation and intervention when indicated.

3. Strives to operate within the parameters of established budgets.

4. Maintains effective, open communication channels with unit staff staying abreast

of activities and potential problems.

5. Assists with the acquisition of medications, equipment and supplies as needed.

6. Maintains effective communication with Nursing Administration and Director of

Acute Care Services/Care Management

1. Observes overall hospital activities and provides assistance as needed.

Maintains a safe environment.

2. Represents Hospital Administration in their absence, maintaining

communications when indicated.

3. Assumes responsibility for the hospital in the absence of Administration during

disaster and emergency situations in accordance with established plans.

4. Interprets philosophy, goals, policies and procedures for personnel, patients and

public.

PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 15% DISCRETION: A

TASKS:

1. Serves as a resource person to the staff, delivering nursing care when required.

2. Manages available resources in the best interest of patient care.

3. Supervises the delivery of nursing care, taking appropriate action as indicated.

4. Pain Management:

a. Assures appropriate and attentive pain management which includes:

1). Facilitating acceptance of the patient's report of pain.

2). Facilitating relief of the physical and psycho social symptoms

associated with pain while optimizing individual and family

functioning.

3) Facilitating promotion of active participation by patients and their

families in selecting pain management strategies and in

communicating new or unrelieved pain.

5. Communicates with patients, significant others, and members of the health care

team for the purpose of facilitating the delivery of care.

1. Assumes responsibility for own personal continuing educational and

developmental needs. Maintains clinical nursing skills.

and meeting the staff's educational needs.

3. Complies with mandatory education and training for supervisory position.

4. Conducts medical necessity reviews as needed.

5. Provides input to performance appraisals.

6. Assists in formulation of Policy and Procedures.
