Job Details

Position Description:
The Department of Plant Pathology at North Dakota State University seeks a microbiologist to conduct research on diseases of economic importance to potato in North Dakota. A successful candidate will be i) responsible for sequencing and analyzing genomes of fungal, bacterial, and viral pathogens affecting potato in North Dakota and elsewhere in the United States; ii) responsible for developing and optimizing molecular assays to detect and quantify potato pathogens with a special emphasis on using the assays to detect pathogens in potato seed or in agricultural soils; iii) expected to assist the PI in phytobiome research, when applicable, to assist in our understanding of a potato healthy soil; iv) expected to interpret and analyze the data and publish results in peer-reviewed journals. A successful candidate must be well-trained in both classical and modern/molecular areas of microbiology or plant pathology. The appointment is for 12 months with extension possible depending on satisfactory performance and funding.

Minimum Qualifications:
1) M.S. degree in Plant Pathology or a related field
2) Experience working with plant pathogens
3) Experience in genomics, next generation genomic sequencing and sequence analysis
4) Experience in applied molecular biology and in development of real-time PCR assays, primer and probe design
5) Computer skills
6) Ability to communicate effectively in English
7) Experience supervising 2 or more individuals
8) Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team

Preferred Qualifications:
1) Knowledge of gene function or expression analysis
2) Bioinformatics analysis experience
3) Experience with conducting greenhouse and field research
