Job Details
The Laboratory Assistant utilizes technology to effectively perform data entry and retrieval and completes documentation; assures accurate specimen labeling; processes laboratory and patient reports; retrieves, opens and sorts specimens' prepares and maintains supply/inventory; initiates, completes and documents quality assurance and maintenance processes; Recognizes problems, troubleshoots and takes corrective action; answers phones promptly and courteously and maintains a neat and orderly work area. Patients cared for include those in the following age groups: infant, children, adolescents, adult and geriatric.
Primary Job Duties:
- Utilizes technology to effectively perform accurate data entry/retrieval and clerical work, and/or completes all required documentation legibly and according to standard operating procedure.
- Assures accurate specimen labeling in all processes to which it applies according to standard operating procedure at all times.
- Processes laboratory and patient reports according to standard operating procedure, i.e., printing, recording, distribution, filing, retrieval, faxing, etc.
- Retrieves, opens, and sorts specimens and verifies complete patient identification and information on requisitions and specimens according to standard operating procedure. Processes patients/specimens according to standard operating procedure, i.e., admitting, order entry, accessioning, timing-in, distribution, etc. Processes blood and body fluid specimens for requested procedure and prepares, distributes and stores specimen aliquots following standard operating procedure.
- Prepares and maintains adequate supply inventory following standard operating procedure, i.e., reagents, stains, media, stock cultures, work process supplies, etc.
- Initiates, completes and documents quality assurance and maintenance processes according to standard operating procedure.
- Recognizes problems, troubleshoots, takes corrective action according to predetermined criteria, documents problems and all corrective action taken and notifies supervisor as appropriate of problems in a timely manner.
- Answers telephone promptly, courteously and in a helpful manner and communicates messages accurately, indicating those requiring immediate action or response.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED :
Required:
• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Computer and keyboarding skills.
• Six month to one year of experience in laboratory or medically related training/field with knowledge of medical terminology.
