Hiring Department:  Transportation

Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification:  $35,000/Annual, full-time, non-exempt, benefitted.

Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm; Subject to call-backs 24/7.

  • Perform scheduled maintenance and repairs on automobiles and light duty trucks, including gasoline and diesel engines. 
  • Adhere to all Federal, State and University safety and environmental protocols.
  • Diagnose vehicle breakdowns utilizing on-board diagnostic equipment and sound mechanical principles
  • Perform routine/scheduled maintenance IAW manufactures’ recommendations/requirements
  • Operate tow/recovery vehicle to transport vehicles to maintenance facility
  • Skilled in operation of electronic diagnostic tools to evaluate mechanical break downs to determine scope of repairs including estimated times and parts required
  • Knowledgeable in automotive and ground equipment tire mounting, balancing and replacement
  • Requires extended periods of standing, squatting, lying on back/stomach, walking, climbing and working in limited movement constricted spaces.
  • Familiar with mechanical equipment and industrial shop safety standards and mandates.
  • Research and order parts from appropriate vendors.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and repairs on non-vehicular equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in the operation and maintenance of light duty grounds equipment (mowers, skid steers, etc.)
  • Skilled  in operation/maintenance of  pumps, lighting equipment, and air compressors
  • Trained in maintenance of auxiliary installed equipment (snowplow, equipment lifts, etc.)
  • Research and order parts from appropriate vendors
  • Thoroughly inspect returned dispatch vehicles, University assigned vehicles and State agency turn-in vehicles for    cleanliness, preventative maintenance and mechanical functionality.
  • Prepare new vehicles for State Fleet use, complete acceptance forms, install tags/decals, notify ND fleet that vehicles are ready and update Fleet focus to reflect accurate condition(s).
  • Prepare turned in vehicles for new assignment or sale to include maintenance check, cleaning and vacuuming.
  • Perform general shop cleaning to maintain shop to industrial cleanliness standards
  • Open work orders and accurately document parts/materials used during maintenance or repairs
  • Track time on job cards to reflect work completed
  • Requires computer skills and knowledge of maintenance tracking software
  • Provide backup assistance as a shuttle bus/van driver
  • Maintain a commercial driver’s license with bus and passenger endorsement and current medical requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associates degree in automotive mechanics or related field
  • One year experience equipment maintenance in repair facility, formal training may be substituted.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook/Email to accomplish day-to-day tasks. 
  • Must have a CDL or obtain within 6 months of employement.
  • Employment offers are conditional based upon successful completion of a Criminal history background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • ASE Certified Automotive Mechanic
  • One year experience in a supervisory role
