JOB SUMMARY

Compounds and dispenses medical prescriptions; maintains drug inventory and stock control systems under the direct supervision of pharmacists to ensure clinical and administrative effectiveness. Assists pharmacists in compounding, preparing and dispensing medical prescriptions to the public after receiving information from clients, customers or patients according to written/faxed prescriptions. Uses computers to enter, access or retrieve data; establishes and maintains patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients and all new prescription and/or refill requests. Maintains proper storage and security conditions for drugs; controls inventory stock level and timeline to ensure adequate supplies. Coordinates departmental quality assurance and other client-focused services with supervisory staff; creates and maintains a safe working environment and conditions that adhere to state laws and regulations.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The pharmacy technician works in a pharmacy environment consisting of IV admixtures, IV infusion devices, automated IV compounding equipment, filling prescriptions including computerized profiles, compounding, billing and reimbursement, patient assistance, drug and supply procurement, and inventory management. The pharmacy technician communicates with various departments to ensure seamless communication and timely care between ordering provider, care team, pharmacy and patient. Excellent time management and communication skills (written and verbal) are required. Extensive knowledge of health care related practices, concepts, regulatory and legal requirements. Set and achieve high performance standards and deliver outstanding customer service.
The technician will be responsible for assisting the pharmacist in the provision of pharmaceutical care to the customers of Sanford Clinic system by following established regulations, standards, and practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be registered through the SD Board of Pharmacy within 30 days or hire or transfer. Must be CPhT Certified through PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) with 12 months of hire or transfer.- Any Technician registered with the SD Board of Pharmacy after July 1, 2014 will be registered as a technician-in-training and will have two years to complete training education and national certification through the PTCB. Failure to obtain National Certification within two years of registering as a technician-in-training will result in termination of position.- Any Technician registered with the SD Board of Pharmacy after July 1, 2011 will be required to obtain their National Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board by July 1, 2014. Failure to obtain National Certification will result in termination of position.- Any Technician registered with the SD Board of Pharmacy before July 1, 2011 will be grandfathered in and not be required to be national certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board High school graduate or GED required. Graduation from an accredited pharmacy technician school is preferred. One year of pharmacy technician experience in a hospital pharmacy setting or background with sterile technique and/or handling hazardous (i.e. lab) chemicals preferred.
