Job Details

Wanted: Newspaper page designer for a different kind of hub.

Forum Design Center is seeking an experienced newspaper page designer who is looking for more flexibility and freedom in their career.

At our hub, designers have their choice of locations – including Dickinson in the oil fields of North Dakota, hip downtown Fargo, Minnesota's beautiful lakes country or Duluth's scenic North Shore. We offer lower page counts than other hubs (our designers average fewer than 12 pages a day) and greater creative freedom. We don't design off modules or templates; the only limits on your creativity are the edges of the page.

We're a family-owned communications chain responsible for the design of nine daily newspapers and more than two dozen weekly or biweekly papers with our team of designers located in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Our benefits package includes PTO that rolls over from year to year so you don’t lose it, paid maternity leave, health insurance that even covers 24/7 video visits, dental coverage, life insurance, 401(k), EAP and short- and long-term disability.

We want you if you're a creative designer looking for more out of your career than turning out pages as fast as you can. We want you to join us if you:

- Are seeking a place where you can interact more with coworkers and editors to create out-of-the-box designs with fewer restrictions;

- Have a strong knowledge of AP style, newspaper design, InDesign and Photoshop;

- Are willing to work the hours when news happens, including weekends, nights and holidays;

- Want to design a variety of content from A1s to features and sports

- Want to work at a place where your voice and opinion matter.

Primaries duties include:

  • Laying out various sections of the daily and weekly newspapers using Adobe InDesign. This can include selecting art and graphics, toning photos and formatting copy to fit in a designated space.

  • Reviewing final proofs and make necessary changes.

  • Communicating with editors and managers remotely via instant message and phone.

  • All other duties as assigned by the Design Hub managers

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, mass communications or related program preferred.

  • One to three years experience in newspaper design.

  • Knowledge of InDesign and Photoshop.

  • Strong grammar and punctuation skills, attention to detail and the ability to work on a deadline.

  • Knowledge of AP style.

  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
