JOB SUMMARY

The Child Life Specialist is responsible to provide optimal developmental and psychosocial support to children and their families in the health care setting. Services are provided to children from infancy to adolescence. The program is designed to support the social, emotional, intellectual and physical needs of children in healthcare settings through direct interventions with children and advocacy regarding the psychosocial needs of children and families. The Child Life Specialist uses interventions such as play, medical play, psychological preparation and rehearsed coping to minimize distress associated with healthcare experiences and to promote resiliency. The Child Life Specialist will participate in collaborating to promote family centered care, and to foster positive hospital-community relations. Has depth of knowledge of child development (birth -- 21), family systems theories, the developmental effects of stress and trauma on children and interventions to alleviate distress. Possesses depth of knowledge of medical diagnosis and procedures. Broad based knowledge regarding the special needs of children with chronic or disabling conditions. In depth knowledge of body of research relating to children in health care settings.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Schedule varies. Position requires individual with Child Life Certification or eligible to obtain this certification.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certification as a Child Life Specialist is required or must be obtained within one year of hire. Eligibility for Child Life Certification included completion of a minimum of 480 hours of a child life clinical experience under the direct supervision of a Certified Child LifeSpecialist. Bachelors Degree in Child Life, Human Development or related feld with previous experience in a Hospital, educational or development setting. Two years experience working with multiple or various age groups of children is preferred. Experience with infants, toddlers, school age children and adolescents in a therapeutic setting preferred. Ability to provide developmental assessments, to represent child life and communicate psychosocial issues to members of the health care team. Must demonstrate strong interpersonal communicaton skills, effective time and resource management. Ability and fexibility to work day, evening and one weekend shift a month.
