JOB SUMMARY

The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the patient during the scheduled work period. The NA provides patient-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned patient under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Provide assistance with basic health care needs including daily living activities; bathing, grooming, toileting, eating, meal preparation and dining needs, emotional and spiritual needs. Administer delegated tasks and treatments. Record vital statistics and other basic health information, including assessing patient's physical condition to aid in diagnosis and treatment. Will collect non-invasive biological specimens from patients as needed. Perform clerical work related to scheduling and documenting patient healthcare. Prepare patient treatment areas for use; prepare and clean medical equipment; dispose of biomedical waste in accordance with standards and policy. Clean patient living areas or treatment rooms.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

The Nursing Assistant is primarily responsible for patient transportation to and from the Radiology Department. This person is responsible for the care of the patient during the time they are between areas. The Nursing Assistant works collaboratively with other interdisciplinary team members. Other duties include delivery of patient care supplies, and routine upkeep of the transporting equipment, accessories and storage area. This position may have access to medications for purposes of distribution to licensed personnel.
The Nursing Assistant combines communication skills and patient handling along with numerous other duties. Sensitivity and patient confidentiality must be practiced at all times. On a continuum the Nursing Assistant must work to develop an understanding of the patient’s physical and emotional status, and must be able to work with growth and development needs of all client populations. This is an active position with a significant amount of walking and assisting patients to and from the wheelchair, cart, or other mode of transportation. The Nursing Assistant will also develop knowledge of the proper handling of medication pumps, chest tubes, catheters and other patient monitoring devices and accessories that must be handled with care during transport.
When students are providing patient care, treatment, and/or services as a part of their training, any/all employees may be asked to supervise the students.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

The Nursing Assistant is primarily responsible for patient transportation to and from the Radiology Department. This is a fast paced position with a significant amount of walking required. Strong customer service skills needed with emphasis on enhancing the patient experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) is preferred. Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications. If working in North Dakota (ND) or Minnesota (MN) and not a Certified Nursing Assistant, must be registered as a Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) through the North Dakota Department of Health or a Nurse Assistant through the Minnesota Department of Health within four months from the date of hire. High school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred, but not required.
