Job Details
A Patient Safety Sitter is used to assist in keep a patient safe when a patient is at risk of harming themselves by pulling lines, falling, wandering and other behaviors. A Patient Safety Sitter is responsible for continuous monitoring of the patient closely at the bedside at all times and never be leaving the patient alone. The Patient Safety Sitter may intervene by assisting the patient to toilet, ambulate, reposition or prevent the patient from pulling on lines.
• JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
A. REPORTS TO: Administrative Nursing Supervisor, Director of Acute Care Services
B. SUPERVISES: N/A
C. INTERRELATIONSHIPS WITH: Nursing staff, ancillary department staff, medical staff, patients, families, other health care providers and the community.
• HOURS OF WORK: As required to meet position responsibilities.
• DRESS CODE: Appropriate patient care attire
• ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK (Minimum qualifications necessary to function at full productivity).
A. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Must be 18 years of age or older. High School graduate preferred.
B. EXPERIENCE: Human services industry experience preferred.
C. JOB KNOWLEDGE (Specific): Read, write and speak the English language at a minimum of a 6th grade level.

• CLIENTELE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY JOB: Patients and families.
• PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB: Majority of time spent sitting and occasional physical effort including lifting/pushing/pulling; irregular schedule/hours of work including evening, nights, weekends and holidays.
• PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB: Fair working conditions with frequent exposure to disagreeable elements or danger.
• EQUIPMENT OR MACHINES USED ON THE JOB: Variety of patient care equipment.
• MENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:
A. JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE: Frequent decisions regarding appropriate interventions to keep patients safe and when to summon assistance.
B. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Ability to respond quickly to changing patient needs.
C. EFFECT OF ERROR: Adverse patient consequences.
D. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Frequent contact with patients and families, clinical staff, other health care providers and the general public.
• PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS, AND AUTHORITIES:
A. RESPONSIBILITY: Safety Sitting
PRIORITY: 95 % OF TIME: DISCRETION:
TASKS: 1. Receive report and direction from the Registered Nurse (RN)
and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). If report is received from an LPN, the RN overseeing the LPN is responsible for directing the care of the patient.
2. Remain at the patient's bedside giving continuous observation and intervention under the direction of the RN/LPN.
3. Provide cares/interventions included below: 1) Observation/Presence 2) Verbal redirection and orientation 3) Hand holding 4) Diversion Activities such as imagery, story telling,
reading, game playing, towel folding, etc… 5) Feeding 6) Assisting to toilet 7) Assisting to ambulate 8) Assisting to reposition 9) Assisting patient to not pull on tubes, lines, etc….
4. Document patient behaviors, cares, interventions, and patient responses.
