JOB SUMMARY

Compounds and dispenses medical prescriptions; maintains drug inventory and stock control systems under the direct supervision of pharmacists to ensure clinical and administrative effectiveness. Assists pharmacists in compounding, preparing and dispensing medical prescriptions to the public after receiving information from clients, customers or patients according to written/faxed prescriptions. Uses computers to enter, access or retrieve data; establishes and maintains patient profiles, including lists of medications taken by individual patients and all new prescription and/or refill requests. Maintains proper storage and security conditions for drugs; controls inventory stock level and timeline to ensure adequate supplies. Coordinates departmental quality assurance and other client-focused services with supervisory staff; creates and maintains a safe working environment and conditions that adhere to state laws and regulations.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Identifies the functions and patterns of drug distribution. Fulfills drug preparation or distribution functions when providing pharmaceutical care. Uses a variety of PC hardware, operating systems, utilities and applications. Follows pharmaceutical guidelines, regulations and standards; adheres to safety procedures. Identifies medical information for accuracy and completeness. Investigates and reports refrigeration issues such as deviations in temperature.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must maintain annual registration as a Pharmacy Technician through the State Board of Pharmacy in state(s) of practice and/or possess multi-state privileges as required by position. Must also complete the required hours of Pharmacy Technician continuing education.Iowa: Effective July 1, 2010, all pharmacy technicians working in Iowa pharmacies must be nationally certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). If enrolled in a technician training program, or not previously having worked as a pharmacy technician, must register as a pharmacy technician trainee within 30 days of starting technician training or employment. A technician trainee must become a nationally certified pharmacy technician within 12 months of starting technician employment or training. A pharmacy technician trainee who does not complete national pharmacy technician certification before expiration of the pharmacy technician trainee registration, must discontinue working as a pharmacy technician.Minnesota: Must have active/current pharmacy technician registration with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy or the completion of a formal technician training program. North Dakota: An applicant for registration as a pharmacy technician must have obtained certification by a national certification body approved by the board of pharmacy. A technician registered after August 1, 1995, must obtain and maintain certification by a national certification body approved by the board of pharmacy. A registered technician not holding certification on April 1, 2011, must obtain certification by March 1, 2014. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is an approved certification body. South Dakota: Registration required within 30 days from the date of hire. Pharmacy Technician Certification required within one year of hire. Technicians registered with the South Dakota Board of Pharmacy after July 1, 2014 will be registered as a “technician-in-training” and will have two years to complete training education and national certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). Failure to obtain National Certification within two years of registering as a “technician-in-training” will result in termination of position. Technicians registered with the South Dakota Board of Pharmacy after July 1, 2011 will be required to obtain their National Certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board by July 1, 2014. Failure to obtain National Certification will result in termination of position. Technicians registered with the South Dakota Board of Pharmacy before July 1, 2011 will be grandfathered in and not be required to be national certified through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board. High School graduate or GED required. Must have completed any additional required education as specified in the state of practice in order to become a registered Pharmacy Technician. Minnesota: As of January 1, 2012 any individual registering for the first time as a technician needs to be 18 years of age or older. In addition, those individuals will have 12 months from your registration date to complete Board-approved pharmacy technician training. North Dakota: To be eligible to be registered by the board of pharmacy as a pharmacy technician the person must have completed one of the following requirements: a) Successful completion of an American society of health systems pharmacists accredited academic program; or b) an American society of health systems pharmacists accredited on-the-job training program.
