Job Details

Transports patients between their hospital room and Rehab Department. Assists

the department in handling patients, maintaining department in a clean, orderly state.


• JOB RELATIONSHIPS

A. REPORTS TO: Inpatient Therapy Clinical Coordinator

B. SUPERVISES: None

C. INTERRELATIONSHIPS WITH: Inpatient Rehab Secretary/Receptionist. Physical

Therapy/Occupational Therapy Aides, patients, nursing staff, ward clerks.


HOURS OF WORK: 20 hours per week or 40 hours per pay period. Weekend rotation; weekday fill-

in as needed or able.


DRESS CODE: Appropriate street clothes or full scrubs.


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK (Minimum qualifications necessary to function at full

productivity).

A. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: No formal education required. High school education preferred. On-the-job training provided.

B. EXPERIENCE: Previous work experience with patients preferred.

C. JOB KNOWLEDGE (Specific): Knowledge of proper body mechanics; safe transportation of

patients for attendance at scheduled treatment times. Use of wheelchairs, hospital beds, carts. Familiar with hospital organization.

A knowledge of growth and development; specifically an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. An understanding of the range of treatment needed by patients of all ages in relation to the growth and development processes to include neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

CLIENTELE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY JOB: Patients of all age groups, infancy through geriatrics.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:

A. Must be able to do a lot of walking, climb stairs, and be on his/her feet most of the day. Need good endurance.

B. Able to lift, transfer and move patients in a safe manner.


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB: Indoor environment with access to most patient rooms

and departments.


EQUIPMENT OR MACHINES USED ON THE JOB: Wheelchairs, carts, hospital beds.
MENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:

A. JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE: Use judgment to select best way to move and transport a patient safely. Judge time needed to get a patient to department on time.

B. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Works semi-independently in selecting safe equipment for transport.

Expected to get patients to department on time in safest manner.

C. EFFECT OF ERROR: Patient safety, inefficient use of therapist time.

D. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Must be in contact with Rehab and nursing staff to inform them

of time vacancies that may occur, and other appropriate information.


PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS, AND AUTHORITIES:

A. RESPONSIBILITY: Transports patients in safe, efficient manner to and from Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy Departments by cart, wheelchair, ambulation.

PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 78% DISCRETION: A

TASKS:

A. Checks schedule board for patient's room, time. B. Goes to nursing station, inquires of patient's availability. C. Uses proper transfer technique to get patient ready for transport. D. Covers patient with appropriate covers, robes; brings shoes for ambulation or clothing if

needed. E. Brings hospital chart with patient on all visits. F. Propels vehicle through halls in a safe manner. G. Places patient in suitable area in department out of line of traffic. H. Notifies appropriate therapist of patient's arrival, or delay.

AUTHORITIES: To transport patient by most effective and safest manner using available equipment.

B. RESPONSIBILITY: Assists patient, Rehab staff while in department.

PRIORITY: B % OF TIME: 15% DISCRETION: C

TASKS:

A. Assists patient on and off treatment table as directed. B. Assists patient with ambulation as directed. C. Assists therapist by picking up and delivering of supplies, messages, etc., as requested;

places progress notes on chart. D. Assists secretary by taking messages, answering phones as needed, etc.

E. Informs therapist of noted changes in patients as seen by the transport person.

AUTHORITIES: Has authority to carry out the above tasks.

C. RESPONSIBILITY: Assists in general cleaning of department.

PRIORITY: B % OF TIME: 5% DISCRETION: C

TASKS:

A. Keeps Therapist aware of needed repair of equipment. B. Helps keep area clean as directed, and records on flow sheet. C. Assists with maintenance of supplies as directed.

AUTHORITIES: Has authority to carry out the above tasks.

D. RESPONSIBILITY: Maintains surveillance of environment condition of PT/OT Service.

PRIORITY: B % OF TIME: 1% DISCRETION: B

TASKS:

A. Follows procedure for safety, emergencies and infection control. B. Identify, correct if possible, potential hazards and report to supervisor.

AUTHORITIES: Has authority to carry out the above tasks.

E. RESPONSIBILITY: Carry out other delegated duties as assigned by director.

PRIORITY: B % OF TIME: 1% DISCRETION: D

TASKS:

A. Maintains educational record of inservices. B. Assists in orientation of new orderlies for training. C. Attend department or inservice meetings as requested by supervisor.

AUTHORITIES: Has authority to carry out the above tasks.

F. RESPONSIBILITY: Continuous Quality Improvement

TASKS:

Stay alert, act responsibly and use common sense to reduce risks. 4. Report actual events and good catches as soon as possible. 5. Create a safe environment by eliminating hazards and identifying and reporting

unsafe systems. 6. Complete all mandatory safety education, attend safety sessions, review and
