Work Schedule:   19 Hours Per Week, Days/Hours Negotiable

Position Details:   

The person in this position will work in the larger Combs/Nagamato-Combs laboratories to assist with ongoing research that includes bench research, maintenance/genotyping/breeding of animal colonies, animal behavior experiments, lab organization, and maintenance and ordering of laboratory supplies.


Maintain/breed/genotype animal colonies for the Combs/Nagamoto-Combs laboratories at the Center for Biomedical Research

  • Extensive animal handling.  
  • Keeping an accurate and active log of all mouse colonies, breeding, genotyping, phenotyping.
  • Maintain several different transgenic mouse strains.
  • Assist with animal behavior tests and administration of treatments via injections, collect tissue, blood, saliva and stool samples from mice, survival/non-survival mouse surgeries, tagging and monitoring of mice, and euthanization.


Process experimental samples and maintain and organize laboratory supplies.

  • Sample processing and analysis.
  • Operate PCR machines and perform gel electrophoresis for DNA/RNA analyses, immunolabeling, staining, and flow cytometric assays for protein analyses, and sectioning of animal tissues.
  • Prepare laboratory solutions such as buffers and fixatives.
  • Organize and lean lab space and labware.
  • Order and stock laboratory supplies.
  • Assist lab members with techniques, lab safety, and record keeping.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Documentation of data and participation in manuscript writing.

  • Keep a detailed log of all animal colonies and animal use including specific experimental details with accuracy and scientific integrity.
  • Contribute to the preparation of data for peer-reviewed scientific publications from the laboratory.



Competencies will include:

  • Willingness and ability to work with mice and people.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint (or equivalent).
  • Ability to use Windows.
  • Must have organizatilnal and prioritization skills.
  • High level of interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Be detail oriented.
  • Understand and adhere to scientific ethics, lab safety procedures and Standar Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the lab.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate Degree in biology, neuroscience, or medical lab science.
  • Minimum of 6 months experience in a biomedical lab wtih mice.
  • Successful completion of criminal history background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • B.S. in biology, medical lab science, or neuroscience.
