JOB SUMMARY

Dispatchers must have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to assist in providing patient care and transportation. Individuals will receive requests for air and ground medical transport, initiating the mobilization of the appropriate teams and communicating with referring hospitals/services. Dispatchers should be able to multitask, be detail orientated and thorough in completing daily tasks. Individuals should be able to deal with high stress situations calmly and effectively while maintaining composure in very difficult situations to collect vital information from callers to determine the severity of a situation and the location to those who need assistance. Individuals must listen carefully to collect relevant details and be able to type the details of calls into computers, and speed and accuracy is of importance when responding to emergencies. Individuals must be able to effectively use radios and other forms of communication. Dispatchers must be able to work with growth and development needs of a diverse population. Individuals should be able to perform data entry using the computer, compiling QI (Quality Improvement) data, and typing any other documentation as assigned and maintain access to, and security of, highly sensitive materials. Dispatchers must be able to read and effectively interpret small-scale maps and information from a computer screen to determine locations and provide directions. Individuals should also be able to search files, databases or other reference materials to obtain needed information. Dispatchers must maintain a sense of pride and ownership for the program. This position may require sitting for extended periods of time. Depending on location of position, work hours will vary depending on patient needs. This may include overtime, call, backup call, nights, days, weekends, and holidays. Individuals should attend training classes to maintain certification licensure, keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Dispatchers work closely with flight teams, pilots, One-Call nurses, and administration to ensure transports are completed efficiently and patients receive the best care possible. EMS training and certification is not required for this location, training is provided.. Dispatchers are responsible for receiving and coordinating requests for air and ground medical transport requiring the use of Sanford AirMed Flight Teams. Tasks include dispatching appropriate aircraft and flight teams, communicating with referring and accepting hospitals/agencies, flight following aircraft, map reading, and data entry using Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) software. Dispatchers must to be able to work in a potentially high-stress and fast-paced environment as part of a team and individually . Applicants should possess excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills, be proficient at typing and comfortable with a Windows-based operating system. This position requires strong skills in critical thinking, problem solving, relationship building and flexibility. Dispatchers need to be able to prioritize tasks, manage time, and work effectively with minimal supervision. Applicants must be able to work in an area of limited space with one other person for a duration of 12 hours and have the potential to work both day and evening shifts. Performs at least 2-3 concurrent activities without reducing productivity. Concentrates on the message and gives the speaker full attention. Uses organization's guidelines for writing reports, correspondence, documentation, etc. Identifies the primary means of communication and their appropriateness for different occasions. Identifies and documents specific problems and resolution alternatives. Works with a specific computer-based communications (CBC) application. Identifies others' needs, concerns, and wishes with some accuracy. Speaks clearly and understandably; using appropriate words, grammar and mannerisms. Adapts easily to changing work demands.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

The Communications Center is the epicenter for all Sanford AirMed communication. The Sanford AirMed Communications Center is located at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls South Dakota within in the main hospital building. Currently, the Communications Center is staffed by 11 dispatchers all of whom bring a wide variety of experience. The Sanford AirMed Communications Center prides itself not only on it's outstanding work culture and close team environment, but its dedication to providing outstanding service to patients across the country.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Depending on location of hire Emergency Medical Dispatch certified or International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) Emergency Medical Dispatch certification must be acquired within six months from date of hire. Depending on location of hire formal knowledge and training of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) principles, practices, and techniques or relevant dispatch experience is preferred (not for Sioux Falls).
