JOB SUMMARY

Provides educational support services as a liaison between school-aged patients, their family, and their home school. Conducts educational assessment on school-aged patients to determine their educational needs and to develop an educational plan. Evaluates how each patient learns best and adapts teaching methods to fit their unique learning needs. Develops and plans creative teaching and learning activities. Incorporates and facilitates educational community programming and activities for patients. Collaborates as an integral part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure the patients educational needs are anticipated and addressed in a thorough, proactive and effective manner. Implements discharge planning process in conjunction with the treatment team. Coordinates transition plan for return to school, providing services to ensure a smooth transition for the child back to home and school. Travel may be required.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and implement strategies to meet the needs of students with a variety of medically limiting conditions. Observe and evaluate children's performance, behavior, social development, and physical health. Confer with parents or guardians, teachers, administrators, and other professionals to discuss children's progress, resolve behavioral, academic, and other problems, and to determine priorities for students and their resource needs. Prepare reports detailing student activities or performance. Identify, develop, or implement intervention strategies, tutoring plans, or individualized education plans (IEPs) for students. Instruct special needs students in academic subjects, using a variety of techniques, such as phonetics, multisensory learning, or repetition to reinforce learning and meet students' varying needs. Supervise, evaluate, and plan assignments for teacher assistants and volunteers. Plan or conduct activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to observe, question, and investigate. Speaks/writes using correct language, mechanics, and gestures. Creates a climate that cultivates imagination, new ideas, and experimentation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a certified teacher or special education teacher, conforming to the licensing standards in the state of practice. Bachelor's degree in Education or related field required. One (1) year of classroom teaching experience or hospital school teaching preferred.
