The Student Nurse Co-op is responsible for utilizing the nursing process to assist in providing individualized nursing care, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse; the nurse co-op integrates academic learnings with practice opportunity. The nurse co-op functions as a member of the patient care team by caring for patients and providing support services under the direction of the Registered Nurse. As a member of the healthcare team, the nurse co-op will employ interpersonal and teamwork skills. The nurse co-op will be evaluated by both the university faculty member and the employer.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Supervision is received by the Manager of the area the co-op is assigned to. Clinical supervision is received from the Registered Nurse and the Shift Charge Nurse.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Support and models behaviors consistent with the mission, vision and values of Altru Health System and University.
- Assists with admissions, discharges and transfers as delegated by the registered nurse. Assists with nursing procedures, gathering equipment as needed and providing patient care as appropriate. Reports changes in patient conditions. Performs pain assessment and takes appropriate action according to standard operating procedure.
- Receives reports for patient/unit assignment. Reviews the plan of care and assists the Registered Nurse in updating, as appropriate while keeping the patient and patient's family in the plan of care.
- Administers medications utilizing the 6 Rights according to standard operating procedure and under clinical supervision of a registered nurse.
- Completes all documentation as delegated and according to standard operating procedures. Perform other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of and compliance with best practices that include, AIDET, bedside shift report, hourly rounding, no pass zone, use of two patient identifiers.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Required:
- Must be enrolled in an academic BSN Nursing Co-op course to work as a co-op or an approved credit class for fall/spring semester.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Two semesters of clinical experience will be required for students to apply
- Special requirements that are preferred for placement in certain areas:
- Family Birth Center or NICU: Completion of maternity nursing course.
- Critical care: Completion of a critical care clinical experience and advanced adult health class.
- Special requirements that are preferred for placement in certain areas:
- Successful completion of functional assessment.
