JOB SUMMARY

Provide daily husbandry for a variety of laboratory animals following specific experimental parameters. Must know and understand species specific needs and be able to follow established protocols when working with animals. Animals may require specific experimental diets, daily medications delivered per os or injected. Administer any necessary experimental requirements and monitor and record environmental conditions. Should understand and be able to use aseptic technique when performing a cage change to minimize transfer of potential pathogens. Responsible for developing and maintaining breeding programs for various genetically engineered strains of mice and rats. Observe animals for abnormal behavior. Must be educated on the experimental protocols to be able to distinguish between an abnormality and experimental protocol. Will have skill in handling and restraint in order to change cages and/or make close observations. Have the knowledge and skill to apply identification to animals as needed and must have knowledge to interpret identification schemes used by the investigators and laboratory team. The technician must be able to maintain detailed records for animal care to meet federal regulations. The technician may be required to obtain experimental data for a research investigator.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Processes large quantities of detailed information with high levels of accuracy. Works with common health information concepts and terminology. Selects protective methods as required by particular working conditions. Utilizes available tools or approaches for increasing knowledge of self-motivation. Explores own motivation and initiative and how it relates to the workplace. Uses organization's guidelines for writing reports, correspondence, documentation, etc. Speaks/writes using correct language, mechanics, and gestures. Applies the concept of 'critical path' in order to complete work in a timely manner and keep larger tasks on track. Clean and maintain kennels, animal holding areas, examination or operating rooms, or animal loading or unloading facilities to control the spread of disease. Clean, maintain, and sterilize instruments or equipment. Supply, operate, or maintain personal protective equipment. Conducts hazard identification and observes universal precautions for injury prevention.

QUALIFICATIONS

Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) required within six months of hire, and must be maintained throughout the appointment. High school diploma or equivalency required. One year experience in laboratory animal husbandry and/or an interest in pursuing a career in scientific research preferred.
