The Lead Phlebotomist is a competent phlebotomist who supports Altru's phlebotomy service. Providing exceptional customer service on a regular basis, the Phlebotomy Lead is involved in the day-to-day operations of the department by being responsible for providing direction and delegation of workload and resources while on shift. The lead is as a technical resource, conducts training and evaluations, and supports the service area's education, customer service and quality goals and initiatives.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission, vision and values of Altru Health System.
  • Competently performs the essential job functions of the Phlebotomist job description.
  • Leads employees by providing work direction and delegating work responsibilities in order to ensure objectives and goals are met in a safe and efficient manner. Identifies staffing requirements based on workload and communicates changes to appropriate individuals.
  • Functions as a resource to the staff regarding policies and procedures, patient care and customer issues. Provides coaching, troubleshoots problems, facilitates change, and monitors service needs. Is a role model, supports and leads by example.
  • Assists and supports the Educator with employee training, competency assessments and documentation. Is a validator for procedures identified by the Supervisor.
  • Assists supervisor with customer service audits, safety, quality and service area processes. Is an active representative on assigned committees.
  • Demonstrates the ability to adjust own schedule to meet fluctuation in workload.
  • Effectively documents all training materials when onboarding a peer.
  • Collaborates with the Educator on an on-going basis to monitor training needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of Phlebotomy experience.
  • Demonstrates proficiency when working with pediatric patients within six (6) months of hire.
  • Demonstrates the ability to take initiative and motivate people, and identify, coordinate and apply resources effectively.
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to be outwardly engaging, approachable and flexible.
