Qualifications

   

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation plus two years college coursework in a Biology, Chemistry or related field; two years of experience working in a laboratory setting and working with chemicals; capable of using computers and related software; ability to read, write, and understand English; and ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Final job offer contingent upon completebackground check and receipt of official transcripts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Extended experience setting up and organizing various types of college labs, budgeting skills, experience ordering materials, experience using MS Office, demonstrated hardware interface skills; and excellent communication/time management/interpersonal skills.

 

About the Job

   

POSITION: Full-time, 12-month position at $15.74/hr. starting as soon as possible. Hours and days of week of work may vary but will generally be Monday through Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm.

JOB SUMMARY: Works with the Science faculty and Department Head and has responsibility for the coordination of the science laboratories provided by the Department of Math, Science, and Technology. Responsible for ensuring safe practices, procedures, and policies are developed and maintained for both the students and faculty involved in teaching and research laboratories.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: Works with faculty and staff to provide preparation for laboratory classes for Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy, Botany, General and Organic Chemistry, Physics, and other associated courses; works with faculty to provide support for various research and technology lab spaces, manages purchasing of supplies and equipment and maintains sufficient inventories; manages the collection, inventory, and disposal of chemical and biological hazardous waste materials; provides technical expertise and support regarding the operation and maintenance of the apparatus and computer systems used in the laboratory and classroom spaces; designs, constructs and modifies equipment as needed for scientific services; assists in the design of demonstrations to accomplish educational goals; cooperates with teaching faculty and other individuals and committees to provide or share in laboratory services; keeps current in all applicable phases of relevant research progress as well as in equipment and materials and scientific techniques used in scientific teaching and research; provides organizational support for department outreach activities including the annual Science Fair and our Robotics camps; consults with academic staff on a wide variety of demonstrations of scientific principles and equipment use; scheduling of space, materials and equipment; works closely with faculty, staff and constituency groups to meet the goals of the University; maintains liaisons with other University staff; provides some training and supervision of student workers; and supervises undergraduate students assisting the department.
