JOB SUMMARY

Plan, organize, develop, coordinate and direct the infection control programs in accordance with current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations that govern such functions for Sanford facilities. Will maintain a close liaison with employee health services to ascertain presence of infection in clinical personnel. Delegates the administrative authority, responsibility and accountability necessary for carrying out assigned duties. Has basic knowledge necessary for data collection and analysis for infection control functions. Ability to make independent and timely decisions when circumstances warrant. Possess the ability to deal effectively with personnel, patients, family members, visitors, clients, regulatory agencies/personnel and the general public. Demonstrate leadership and supervisory ability and maintain the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel. Knowledgeable of medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to infection control and occupational health. Possess a working knowledge of epidemiology, microbiology, infectious diseases, and principles of asepsis, disinfection and sterilization. Will apply the principles of epidemiology to conduct infection surveillance and occupational injury evaluation to identify, analyze, recommend and evaluate quality improvement measures to ensure a successful program. Ability to apply knowledge of acute care practices relevant to infection control. Possess the abilities necessary to provide for a comprehensive infection control program. Ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices. Participate in training and education in surveillance, prevention and control of hospital infections, epidemiology, microbiology and biostatistics. Complete annual educational requirements established by facility to include safety education and others specified by applicable hospital policy. Complete continuing education programs provided by local, regional or national organizations relative to infection control and epidemiology. Will maintain current knowledge of published literature relative to infection control and occupational health. Work collaboratively with infection and prevention and staff, to accomplish the goals and objective of the infection prevention program. Evaluation infection control trends, practices, and provide educational programs for employees. Possess an understanding and working knowledge of microbiology and epidemiology. Responsibilities include surveillance of health care associated infections, reportable illnesses, evaluation and reporting of statistical information, consultation on asepsis, disinfection, sterilization, isolation, disease transmission and related issues. Monitors compliance of standards and regulations, strategies, and evidence-based aspects. Evaluates and improves performance of patient outcomes. Ability to research needs and special projects are assigned. Willing to learn computer programs and applications necessary for data collection and analysis. Possess good interpersonal skills as well as seek out new information and knowledge. Able to think critically and problem solve effectively.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Applies specific sterilization and disinfection programs to prevent common infectious diseases in public areas within healthcare facilities. Communicate research findings on various types of diseases to health practitioners, policy makers, and the public. Conduct research to develop methodologies, instrumentation, and procedures for medical application, analyzing data and presenting findings Consult with and advise physicians, educators, researchers, government health officials, and others regarding medical applications of sciences, such as physics, biology, and chemistry. Delivers written and oral communication, responds to questions and concerns, and produce specific outcomes and impact. Documents and updates surveillance standards for sterilization and disinfection, and dispatches documentation within healthcare facilities. Evaluates risk assessment models and techniques relevant to a specific line of business. Investigate diseases or parasites to determine cause and risk factors, progress, life cycle, or mode of transmission. Oversee public health programs, including statistical analysis, health care planning, surveillance systems, and public health improvement. Plan, administer and evaluate health safety standards and programs to improve public health, conferring with health department, industry personnel, physicians, and others. Prepares proposals and presentations for a consulting opportunity. Reviews and ensures compliance with relevant organizational and legal policies and procedures. Teach principles of medicine and medical and laboratory procedures to physicians, residents, students, and technicians.

QUALIFICATIONS

Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state. Board of Certification in Infection Control (CIC) by the Certification Board of Infection Control, Inc. (CBIC) is required. If certification is not obtained at the time of hire, incumbent has 36 months from date of hire to obtain certification. Graduate from a nationally accredited nursing program preferred, including, but not limited to, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), and National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). Bachelors degree in Nursing preferred. Two years of nursing experience required. If applicable, an additional registered nurse (RN) state licensure of graduate from an approved Masters of Public Health (MPH) program may be required, when applicable for practice environment. Two years experience in a healthcare field preferred.
