Job Details

The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) performs clerical duties including chart preparation, follow up appointments, and assisting with patient care as directed by RN or LPN. This includes patient transportation/escort to pharmacy or discharge. The HUC assists with answering telephone calls and messages at nurse's station.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Supports and models behaviors consistent with the mission, vision and values of Altru Health System.
  • Schedules appointments.
  • Completes data entry in a timely manner and according to standard operating procedures, i.e., clinical circumstances. Obtains, maintains, and completes all computer reports.
  • Communicates orders to the nurse and ancillary departments according to standard operating procedure.
  • Identifies and communicates patient issues to the nurse or identified caregiver.
  • Facilitates department flow.
  • Ensures that all necessary chart forms are available, i.e., individual forms and downtime documents.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and ability to manage the nurse call system by answering call lights courteously and relaying information according to priority.
  • Performs chart completion according to standard operating procedure.
  • Receives and directs all patients, visitors, and professionals ensuring that their needs are met in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Triages customer calls and requests by notifying the appropriate staff member. Maintains excellent telephone etiquette.
  • Ensures distribution of communication as assigned/requested, i.e., interdepartmental faxes, requests to post, mail, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed to meet the needs of the department/organization.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Required:
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Education beyond high school in a health care field of study or equivalent experience in a health care related area.
