Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification:  Salary $51,266/year, full time (40 hours/week), benefited, exempt. 
Benefits: Includes single or family health care coverage (premiums paid for by the university), basic life insurance, EAP, retirement plan, tuition waiver, annual and sick leave.  Optional benefits available: supplemental life, dental, vision, long term care insurance, flexible spending account, supplemental retirement plans.  
Work Schedule: 8:00AM-4:30PM, Monday-Friday, Occasional evening/weekend hours required. Travel including possible weekend travel is required. This position is located in Bismarck, ND and is funded with a grant which is currently funded for one year.

The mission of the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines (CNPD) is to prepare future leaders, to advance human well-being and improve quality of life for diverse populations, with an emphasis on rural communities in North Dakota, the region and beyond, through the provision of high-quality innovative inter-professional education, research and service. The CNPD is comprised of three departments: Nursing, Nutrition & Dietetics, and Social Work.

The RAIN Program (Recruitment/Retention of American Indians into Nursing) is a program within the UND College of Nursing & Professional Disciplines. The Mandan Hidatsa and Ariakra (MHA) Education Pathways project is an empowerment model for MHA members who are pursuing a higher education or vocational training. The MHA Mentor's primary responsibilities are: 

  • Provide support services to individuals at designated state colleges, tribal colleges and other institutions as well as students in vocational training.
  • Provide ongoing support services to students by establishing strong relationships; conduct student assessments; develop training modules for student success; develop educational plans with each student; monitor student progress; develop strategies to address educational and other barriers to student success; assist students in the completion of various forms and tasks related to admission and financial aid and other educational services. 
  • Maintain student records utilizing established program model
  • Monitor & report student progress to the Project Coordinator by preparing status reports
  • Will use excellent interpersonal communication and computer skills.
  • Demonstrates a knowledge of the American Indian culture, sociological and psychosocial behavior.
  • Mentor must be able to anticipate and effectively manage barriers to student success through the creative application of educational tools, counseling and extensive knowledge of the matriculation process.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, Education or related fields.
  • 1 year experience working with American Indian students and/or communities.
  • Experience with education institutions in ND.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Social Sciences, Education, or Guidance & Counseling; or related field.
  • Extensive experience with the American Indian culture, sociological and psychosocial behavior.
  • Prior experience reporting on sponsored funded project objectives.
  • Experience in development of educational plans.
