Minimum Hiring Salary/Position Classification:  $31,000 plus/year, Full-time, Benefited, Non-exempt
Benefits: Includes single or family health care coverage (premiums paid for by the university), basic life insurance, EAP, retirement plan, tuition waiver, annual and sick leave.  Optional benefits available: supplemental life, dental, vision, long-term care insurance, flexible spending account, supplemental retirement plans. 
Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

The Center for Family Medicine in Minot, ND is seeking experienced and talented applicants to serve as a Medical Billing Technician in their clinic.This position will prepare claims for medical and third party payers including insurance companies, medical assistance, workers compensation, Indian Health Services, etc. The position will communicate with patients verbally and in writing regarding their health care claims, and will research problem accounts and follow through with appropriate action. Duties include:
 

  • Prescreen patient appointments, correctly identify and obtain necessary authorizations, verify insurance coverage benefit levels, copays and coinsurances.
  • Serve as financial counselor in notification and collection of outstanding account balances.
  • Prepare e-charts and ensure correct insurance information
  • Answer the phone in a timely and professiona manner and in accordance with the UND Center for Family Medicine standards to ensure excellent customer service.
  • Route calls to appropriate department or staff member and recognize and appropriately direct caller if an emergent situation in accordance with policies.
  • Complete patient check out process, including printing patient discharge documents and scheduling follow-up appointments.
  • Assist traffic on the phones.
  • Assist providers, nurses and patients at the conclusion of the visit.
  • Review and process electronic charge tickets using automated billing software.
  • Assist patients with questions regarding their accounts on insurance claims
  • Gather, validate, update and accurately input patient information into computer system.
  • Communicate with and establish positive relationships with internal and external customers to problem solve, explain policies and procedures, and explain financial processes (i.e., co-payments, referrals, address verification) to maximize timely reimbursement.
  • Recognize, evaluate and resolve problems. 
  • Provide courteous reception assistance to patients and other staff to promote and ensure customer satisfaction.  
  • Determine and verify appropriate demographics (obtain current information and validate):  patient name (correct spelling of); date of birth; address; insurance coverage/information; financial class; and responsible party-guarantor.
  • Attend meetings and inservices as scheduled.
  • Obtain continuing education credits as required and submit renewals to supervisor.
  • Participate in departmental quality assessment and improvement program as well as departmental education programs.

  • Ability to perform computer data entry in a timely and accurate manner. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of protected health information (PHI) 
  • Ability to be an ambassador for the facility, appropriately representing the UND Center for Family Medicine and its counterparts.
  • Communicate and establish positive relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Establish good rapport with patients and their families and respects the patient's right to privacy.
  • Ability to process patient and public inquiries with poise and efficiency.
  • Ability to recognize, evaluate, and resolve problems and correct errors.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift/move/transfer records boxes up to 50 lbs. in weight.


Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Experience working with insurance claims processing, Explanation of Benefits (EOB) forms, and denials
  • Successful completion of  criminal history records check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year experience working in a medical billing office
  • Basic knowledge of ICD-10 diagnosis coding and CPT procedural coding manuals
  • Knowledge of medical office procedures
