JOB SUMMARY

The Cancer Registrar maintains the Sanford computerized cancer database in compliance with the regulations of the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer (CoC). Analyzes and interprets clinical and demographic data and determines appropriateness of case inclusion in the cancer database. Identifies, codes and abstracts records of all eligible cancer patients (analytic and non-analytic), utilizing the cancer registry data system within the guidelines and requirements of the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Program Standards. Conducts annual follow-up on patients in the Cancer Registry to ensure complete data tracking. Provides assistance to the Cancer Committee to ensure compliance with Commission on Cancer Standards, including Cancer Case conference participation. Aids in ensuring compliance with CoC standards for patient follow-up, including records of recurrences and progressions. Prepares reports per data queries, as delegated, to provide timely and accurate statistics as required for treatment, quality, education, research and administrative purposes. Assists with the preparation of the annual report and departmental policies and procedures as requbested. Ensures accuracy and timeliness of Cancer Registry data submissions to the National Cancer Data Base (NCDB) as requbested. May coordinate participation in special studies commissioned by the CoC. Completes necessary continuing education to support compliance with Commission on Cancer accreditation standards and assists with other work to maintain compliance with applicable standards. Must possess knowledge of ICD9, ICD-10, ICDO, and morphology coding. Requires extensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and disease processes. Works extensively with electronic medical records and protected health information and is required to adhere to HIPAA privacy and security regulations and policies related to the same.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Understands medical terminology associated with the contents of patient charts. Identify, compile, abstract, and code patient data, using standard classification systems. Enter data, such as demographic characteristics, history and extent of disease, diagnostic procedures, or treatment into computer. Prepare statistical reports, narrative reports, or graphic presentations of information, such as tumor registry data for use by hospital staff, researchers, or other users. Consult classification manuals to locate information about disease processes. Initiates communication with other individuals or teams to solve shared problems cooperatively. Delivers written and oral communication, responds to questions and concerns, and produce specific outcomes and impact. Applies professional conduct and ethics in daily work; acts in compliance with legal requirements. Works with quality assurance methods, tools and techniques. Advises others on how to ensure the data accuracy, integrity and reliability.

QUALIFICATIONS

Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) through the National Cancer Registrars Association is preferred. Certification as a Tumor Registrar required within three years of hire. Associate's degree in Health Information Technology or related health care degree required, which must include two semesters of college-level anatomy and physiology. Must have a working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, medical records procedures, and knowledge of staging of cancers according to American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) guidelines. Cancer Registry experience is preferred.
