JOB SUMMARY

Emergency Medical Technicians must have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life threatening emergencies. Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance. Individuals are responsible for the delivery of emergency patient care. Emergency Medical Technicians must be competent in trauma and medical situations, both pre-hospital and in the clinical setting. Individuals should possess a basic knowledge and the necessary skills to provide lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS response and may need to assist additional EMS Responders at the scene and/or during transport.In an Ambulance setting, the Emergency Medical Technician will drive mobile intensive care unit to a specified location, following instructions from emergency medical dispatcher. Individuals will respond to emergency calls, administer first aid treatment or life support care to sick or injured persons in prehospital settings. Emergency Medical Technicians will obtain the patients medical history and vital statistics. Individuals will help assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize the patients for emergency needs and treatment procedures during transportation. Emergency Medical Technicians will utilize necessary medical equipment to treat the patient and ascertains the extent of their injuries or illness. Individuals will communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide information about the situation, to arrange transfer of patients, report patient information to medical staff in a timely and accurate manner, or to receive instructions for further treatment. Ensures that the ambulance is clean and washed and kept in a neat orderly condition. After each call, individuals must restock and replace used linens, blankets and other supplies, cleans all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures, checks of all equipment so that the ambulance is ready for the next run and maintains ambulance in efficient operating condition. Physical activities include but not limited to will require considerable use of arms and legs and moving of whole body; such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling materials.Individuals must successfully complete at state approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Services Education Standards. Individuals must attend continuing education and training classes to maintain current certifications and/or licensure. Individuals must keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.In a Hospital based setting, Emergency Medical Technicians under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, will assist in performing patient care services and support activities of the patient care unit. Individuals should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the Emergency Department throughout flow and anticipate work flow. Emergency Medical Technicians are to be multi-skilled in order to provide expanded bedside services. Individuals should have knowledge of and utilize appropriate age-related patient care protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of all ages of patients. Emergency Medical Technicians will interact with patients to build rapport or provide emotional support. Individuals must be able to work with growth and development needs of a diverse population. Emergency Medical Technicians observe, record, and report to physician the patient's vital signs, measures input and output; collects non-invasive specimens; performs simple diagnostic tests and obtains urine specimens and records all data collected in the medical record.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Looks for and considers non-verbal cues from individuals and groups. Uses fact-finding techniques and diagnostic tools to identify problems. Administers appropriate first aid and follows emergency procedures. Measures vital signs and conducts basic diagnostic tests; offers preliminary diagnoses. Pursues development opportunities consistent with career objectives. Asks questions to validate the understanding of the subject matter. Performs at least 2-3 concurrent activities without reducing productivity. Assists in documentation of medical histories, symptoms, and vital signs for assigned patients. Builds a rapport with the patient and explains the condition and course of action effectively. Observes skill practice; offers constructive feedback.

QUALIFICATIONS

BLS certification is required and depending upon location, national registry status as an EMT level may be required. Depending on state requirements, individuals may need to have a state license. NIMS ICS100,200, and 700 completed, and continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation. Additional training provided/workshops/ or staff meetings are to be attended as per policy.Must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record. Must be 18 years or older, approval needed for those under 21 to drive. May not be required for those in a Hospital setting. High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited Training Program required for licensing. Must have a thorough knowledge of EMT principles, practices and techniques, knowledge of how various equipment such as a monitor or defibrillator work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.
