Job Details
Under the supervision of the RN Preceptor, the Intern performs duties assisting nurses in the treatment and care of patients while maintaining confidentiality of patient information.
• JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
A. REPORTS TO: Department Director or Unit Coordinator / Charge Nurse and Preceptor
B. SUPERVISES: None
C. INTERRELATIONSHIPS WITH: Unit Nursing Staff, Patients, Ancillary Departments= Staff, Physicians, Clinics, Families.
• HOURS OF WORK: Variable
• DRESS CODE: Per Unit policy
• ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK (Minimum qualifications necessary to function at full productivity).
A. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Current BSN/BAN student entering his/her senior year in an accredited program with an above average grade point average. Is currently certified in Basic Life Support (CPR).
B. EXPERIENCE: None
C. JOB KNOWLEDGE (Specific): Working knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, public and other providers.

• PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB: Sustained physical effort, seldom seated, continuous activity, lifting / pushing / pulling.
• PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB: Fair working conditions with frequent exposure to disagreeable elements and danger.
• EQUIPMENT OR MACHINES USED ON THE JOB: Fax, computer, telephone, patient, call system, copy machine, patient carts, wheelchairs, simple kitchen equipment and various medical equipment.
• MENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:
A. JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE: Requires continuous mental effort to assist preceptor in decision making and problem solving on a variety of patient care situations, many of which are complex and/or stressful in nature.
B. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Performs duties under supervision of preceptor with independent action as allowed by preceptor.
C. EFFECT OF ERROR: High liability for nurse and hospital for patient care errors B error unacceptable.
D. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Frequent multiple contact with other care providers and ancillary support staff.

1. Reports and records observations, both in the form of end of shift reports and through charting in the patient=s medical record.

department, staff across departments. 5 Interacts appropriately with external customers, i.e. patients, families,
medical staff, vendors. 6. Role models positive behaviors.
G. RESPONSIBILITY: Service Excellence Tasks: Demonstrates an ongoing commitment to the Service Excellence philosophy by adhering to behaviors outlined in Rice=s AStandards of Excellence.@
H. RESPONSIBILITY: Safety - Maintain and promote a safe environment for all patients, visitors and staff.

risk. 3. Stay alert, act responsibly and use common sense to reduce risks. 4. Report Aactual events@ and Agood catches@ as soon as possible. 5. Create a safe environment by eliminating hazards and identifying and
reporting unsafe systems. 6. Complete all mandatory safety education, attend safety sessions, review and
