Job Details

Position Description:
This position will assist the barley plant breeder in developing improved varieties for North Dakota and surrounding areas. Assistance in planning, organizing, and conducting scientific research in breeding, genetics, and production of six- and two-rowed barley. Responsibilities include identifying, evaluating, and utilizing appropriate procedures to allow successful completion of experiments; data analysis using appropriate statistical procedures; summarizing research results, assist in presenting results, and assist in writing subsequent research publications. Duties will require coordination with the plant breeder, other members of the research project, and project members of other departments collaborating on barley.
Supervising and training subordinates and performing various other duties of a scientific nature.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Earned B.S. degree or the equivalent in Plant Sciences, Agronomy, Crop & Weed Sciences. Individuals without a BS degree must have a minimum of two years of working full time in a plant breeding program
• Knowledge in FHB inoculation and disease ratings
• Working experience in small plot research
• Working experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing field plot equipment
• Working computer experience in the use of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and database programs
• Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work well with others and effective supervisory skills
• Valid U.S. driver's license
• ND Certified Pesticide Applicators License or ability to be certified

Preferred Qualifications:
• Working experience with the execution of field, greenhouse and laboratory
trials, preferably in the context of a plant breeding program
• Prior supervisory experience

Physical Demands:
• Work with farm equipment
• Must be capable of lifting 75+ pounds
• Work outside under challenging weather conditions
• Work longer hours seasonally, including weekends when needed for planting and harvest
• Ability to travel to different sites in North Dakota, Arizona, and Puerto Rico
