Job Details

Maintain a high standard of cleanliness in an assigned area as specified by a work schedule. This will be accomplished by utilization of a seven step cleaning procedure. Housekeeper has daily direct contact with patients, and must have a good diplomacy with patients, visitors, and hospital staff.


JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

A. REPORTS TO: Housekeeping Supervisor

B. SUPERVISES: N/A

C. INTERRELATIONSHIPS WITH: Patients, visitors, and hospital staff.


HOURS OF WORK: Vary depending on area assigned to.


DRESS CODE: As designated by Department Director.


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK (Minimum qualifications necessary to function at full productivity).

A. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school preferred; must be able to read and write English. Must have basic math knowledge and able to follow instructions. Knowledgeable about housekeeping procedures/techniques. Will be trained on the job.

B. EXPERIENCE: Previous experience helpful but not required.

C. JOB KNOWLEDGE (Specific): Housekeeping background helpful but not required, must be capable of working in a hospital setting.


BUDGET: Need to keep cost in line with yearly budget.


CLIENTELE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY JOB: patients, visitors, and hospital staff.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB: A. A cleaning cart with various supplies is pushed room to room. B. Waist height carrying of cleaning supplies from the cart into a room. C. Forward reaching to the floor to pick up the trash and to then carry it to a bin. D. Dirty laundry weighing from less than 8# to 30# is dragged carrying distances from 5-20'. E. Forward bending to lift dirty laundry from the floor to soiled utility tote to not exceed 30 lbs. F. Reaching is done to clean IV poles, potty chairs, beds, shelves, mirrors, walls and windows.

Extended tools are available to assist with above the head reaching. G. Varying pieces of equipment are moved to clean under them - i.e. - beds, carts with

equipment. H. A limited amount of furniture, moving without wheels is done within the room - i.e. recliners. I. Mops and pails ranging in weight from 8-24# are moved and tipped over an edge - 7" high- to

empty. J. Office areas and departments - i.e. laboratory - part of the assigned areas to be cleaned. K. Routine patterns of arm moving in a figure 8 are done when mopping the floors. L. Frequent downward pushing of a handle to wring the mop out - this is done after every 5x10'

square. M. Use of an upright vacuum cleaner to vacuum carpeted areas - it has an adjustable beater bar

is required. N. Frequent cleaning up of vomit and bodily fluids is required. O. Moving of soiled linen totes from soiled utility room to the dock area for pick up will be

performed on a daily basis or as needed.


EQUIPMENT OR MACHINES USED ON THE JOB: Dust mop, Wet mop, Mop bucket, Supply cart, High duster and Vacuum.


MENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:

A. JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE: Housekeeper must be able to assess standard of cleanliness that is acceptable and apply corrective action. Must have ability to complete tasks in a timely manner. Must be tactful in daily contact with patients, staff and visitors.

B. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Must work as a team without close supervision on a daily basis and must also determine which duties have priority over others. Responsible for cleaning assigned areas with as little disruption as possible to patient, visitors and hospital staff.

C. EFFECT OF ERROR: Could result in patient complaints regarding cleanliness of room and surrounding area. Extremely important to sanitize all areas to eliminate the possibility of infections being spread.

D. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Patients, visitors, and hospital staff.


PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS, AND AUTHORITIES:

A. RESPONSIBILITY: Daily cleaning of all assigned areas.

PRIORITY: % OF TIME: 95% DISCRETION:

TASKS: 1. Follow seven step cleaning method in assigned areas as instructed. 2. Use Standard (universal) precautions. 3. Clean all units according to proper procedures. 4. Keep soap dispensers and paper supplies filled in all assigned areas. 5. Vacuum carpets daily in patient areas and weekly in office areas. 6. Dust mop floors daily in patient areas and weekly in office areas. 7. Wet mop with disinfectant water solution in all patient rooms and restrooms. 8. Wipe down sinks and counter tops with disinfectant water solution. 9. Wipe down furniture with disinfectant water solution. 10. Wipe down stainless steel fixtures with stainless steel cleaner. 11. Dust off fans, ledges, silk flowers, tables, lights, etc. in patient areas and in office areas. 12. Stripping and cleaning of beds follow proper procedures in assigned areas. 13. Tub cleaning follow proper procedures in assigned areas. 14. Remove all garbage on daily basis in all assigned areas. 15. Clean refrigerators that are used by Patients, families and visitors weekly and document

on Housekeeping dismissal notice sheets. 16. Cleaning of sleep rooms on a daily basis. 17. Pick up garbage at night and Sundays on 2nd and 3rd floors. 18. Pick up garbage in Hemo department on weekends. 19. 1A position will clean Pharmacy and medication rooms in the following areas AHC,

WWC, Ped's, ER, AMB and MHU in & out patient on a daily basis. 20. All housekeepers will perform other duties as assigned.

AUTHORITIES: Housekeeper has the authority to schedule own time to carry out all tasks in order to insure that the standard of cleanliness is accomplished in a responsible, accurate and timely manner.

B. RESPONSIBILITY: Maintenance of housekeeping equipment and stocking supplies.

PRIORITY: % OF TIME: 5% DISCRETION:

TASKS: 1. Maintain cleaning supplies and paper products on housekeeping cart and in closets at

all times. 2. Fill out work order for Maintenance request for repairs needed on building or equipment. 3. Maintain equipment in good working condition. 4. Notify Housekeeping Supervisor if repairs are needed for housekeeping equipment.

AUTHORITIES: Housekeeper has the authority to schedule own time to carry out all tasks in order to insure that the standard of cleanliness is accomplished in a responsible, accurate and timely manner.

C. RESPONSIBILITY: Continuous Quality Improvement

Tasks: 1. Demonstrates understanding of CQI philosophy. 2. Participates in CQI training activities or CQI teams if appropriate. 3. Demonstrates sensitivity to customers and their needs.

4. Interacts appropriately with internal customers, i.e. coworkers within department, staff across departments.

5. Interacts appropriately with external customers, i.e. patients, families, medical staff, vendors.

6. Role models positive behavior and works as a team.

D. RESPONSIBILITY: Service Excellence
