Job Details
Under the direction of a licensed dentist, instruct, supervise and evaluate
Dental Hygiene students to work with patients to perform oral prophylaxis, conduct patient education and
explain how to practice good oral hygiene, provide dental hygiene services to patients, provide other duties
related to preservation of dental health and prevention of dental disease.
• JOB RELATIONSHIPS:
A. REPORTS TO: Director of Rice Dental Clinic
B. SUPERVISES:
C. INTERRELATIONSHIPS WITH: Dentists, Instructors, Hygienists, Assistants, Office staff,
Dental students, Dental Hygiene students and patients of the Dental Clinic.
• HOURS OF WORK: Generally 8 - 4:30 or as needed.
• DRESS CODE: Scrubs and protective clothing/equipment.
• ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK (Minimum qualifications necessary to function at
full productivity).
A. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: Graduate of accredited Dental Hygiene school, BS
degree and licensed by the state of Minnesota.
B. EXPERIENCE: Previous 3 years dental experience required. Previous supervisory/instructor
experience preferred.
C. JOB KNOWLEDGE (Specific): Must possess and demonstrate high level clinical skills
and patient care techniques.
• BUDGET: Assist with maintaining department budget and work in a cost efficient manner.
• CLIENTELE DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY JOB: Patients, co-workers, students, residents and faculty
• PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB: Need for constant alertness to client/patient/employee needs
and/or potential problem areas. Occasional lifting, must be able to stand for long periods of time, must have
good manual dexterity to use rotary equipment and other dental instruments within a patient's mouth. Use
hand scalers, ultrasonic cleaning instruments and motor or air driven dental polishers.
• PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB: Clean, well lighted, quiet, clinic type environment. Some
noise associated with dental equipment. Exposure to blood and body fluids.
• EQUIPMENT OR MACHINES USED ON THE JOB: Dental and x-ray equipment associated with School
of Dentistry. Office equipment: fax, copier, computers, etc.
• MENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB:
A. JUDGMENT AND INITIATIVE: Perform routine duties following prescribed patient
care protocols and procedures.
B. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Work under the direction of the dentist with considerable
independent judgment is required to provide appropriate instruction to students.
C. EFFECT OF ERROR: Potential client harm or disruption of operations.
D. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Dental Hygiene and dental students, patients, staff,
dentists, other health care providers.
• PRINCIPLE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS, AND AUTHORITIES:
A. RESPONSIBILITY: Supervises activities of Dental Hygiene students
PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 50% DISCRETION: A
TASKS: 1. Instruct hygiene students in w ork techniques and procedures. 2. Determine student requirements, establish w ork priorit ies, organize w ork schedules,
provides orientat ion and assign dut ies. 3. Evaluate performance, coach students, and prepare evaluat ion reports. 4. Prepare administrat ive, technical, pat ient and manpow er reports. 5. Ensure comfort, safety, and cleanliness of dental facilit ies. 6. Establish, monitor and maintain stock level for supplies and equipment.
B. RESPONSIBILITY: Provides dental services to patients.
PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 40% DISCRETION: A
TASKS:
1. Examine patient's teeth and gums recording the presence of diseases and abnormalities and
report findings to dentist.
2. Remove calculus, stains and plaque from teeth.
3. Perform root planning as a periodontal therapy.
4. Expose and process dental radiographs using bite wings, films, and related equipment. Read x-
rays and alert dentist to observations.
5. Apply cavity preventative agents such as fluorides and pit and fissure sealants.
6. May administer anesthetics; provide nitrous oxide anxiolysis, place and carve filling materials,
temporary fillings and periodontal dressings; remove sutures; and smooth and polish metal
restorations.
7. Provide education to help patients develop and maintain good oral health.
8. Decontaminate the operatory, sterilize and maintain instruments.
9. Assist dentist at chair side as needed.
C. RESPONSIBILITY: Coordinates Clinic Health Promotion and Prevention
Activities and serves on internal and external Rice committees.
PRIORITY: A % OF TIME: 10% DISCRETION: A
TASKS:
1. Participates and is active member on Rice committees as appropriate including:
Patient Education, Outreach.
2. Arrange job shadow opportunities for health professional students.
3. Coordinates Give Kids a Smile
4. Works with area Head Start programs for the provision of care at the dental clinic.
5. Provide dental health education through outreach activities.
6 . Participates in other internal or external committees as assigned.
7. Other duties as assigned.
D. RESPONSIBILITY: Service Excellence
TASKS:
1. Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the Service Excellence philosophy by
adhering to behaviors outlined in Rice's "Standards of Excellence".

1. Maintain and promote a safe environment for all patients, visitors and
employees.

3. Do not use shortcuts or work-a-rounds that may reduce safety or
increase risk.
4. Stay alert, act responsibly and use common sense to reduce risks.
5. Report actual events and good catches as soon as possible.
6. Eliminate hazards and identify and report unsafe systems.
7. Complete all mandatory safety education and attend safety sessions.
8. Review and understand the Safety Program as identified on RiceNet.
9. Seek answers to questions you have about the Safety Program.
10. Develop appropriate infection control policies, procedures and
practices for the Clinic in cooperation with the Rice Infection Control
Nurse.
