The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead is now accepting applications for its 2019 paid summer internship program. Three candidates will be selected for a flexible 10-week period. Students with a news reporting, sports reporting or photography emphasis will be considered. Our summer interns will receive invaluable newsroom experience in a fast-paced environment as they contribute to both the print and digital product. Applications will be accepted through Jan. 18, 2019, and internship offers will be made in February 2019. These paid internships can begin as early as May or as late as June and run into early August.

The Fargo-Moorhead area has been named by several publications as one of the best places to live with three universities, three progressive hospitals, a thriving business community, a strong agricultural economy, and a dynamic arts and entertainment scene. Interns will have no shortage of places to explore during their free time.

Interns will have the opportunity to learn on-the-job skills in a fast-paced environment. In addition to covering breaking news, reporters will be encouraged to dig for stories and produce thorough, engaging content for a targeted audience that may be used in both digital and print production.

  • Receives assignments and develops own ideas into relevant news content that incorporates multimedia aspects such as video, audio and photography in all stories.
  • Gathers and verifies information for stories through interviews, observations and research.
  • Sports reporters will be included in game coverage and get a chance to write feature stories.
  • Copy editors and designers will work on the night desk, sharpening their editing and design skills as they contribute to the paper.
  • Photographers will step in as a regular member of the photo rotation, taking photos for various sections and platforms.
  • Organizes material, determines focus and writes stories according to editorial style and format standards, for multiple platforms.
  • Builds rapport and stays attuned to local, regional and state issues, attends local and regional board meetings.
  • May need to use video and camera equipment as needed for stories.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Professional experience writing, AP style preferred.
  • Flexibility. Ability to work long or unpredictable hours without loss of quality.
  • Ability to handle deadline stress and work on deadline.
  • Ability to relate with people in the community.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and emotional situations, balance competing demands, set priorities and juggle several issues at once.
  • Current academic track of journalism is required.
  • Knowledge of freedom of information and libel laws preferred.
  • Exhibit a deep-seated sense of fairness and sensitivity to all readers and subjects of articles
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to listen, interview and take accurate notes and write accurate, clear and concise stories.
  • Detail oriented, strong organizational skills.
  • Computer skills in word processing and content management systems.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is insurable by the company.
  • Must carry an acceptable level of vehicle insurance as required by the company.
