Job Details

Under the supervision and/or direction of a Supervisor, Clinical Director, Unit Coordinator or Staff Nurse; performs various duties assisting staff nurses in the treatment and care of patients in accordance with the established methods/ procedures of the Hospital and principles of service excellence.


JOB RELATIONSHIPS:

A. REPORTS TO: Administrative Nursing Supervisor

B. SUPERVISES: None

C. INTERRELATIONSHIPS WITH: CPD staff, nursing units, all other hospital departments.


HOURS OF WORK: Variable/rotating shifts covering 24/7


DRESS CODE: Per department dress code.


ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK (Minimum qualifications necessary to function at full productivity).

A. EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma or equivalent, ability to read, write and comprehend medical terminology. Current certification as a Nursing Assistant preferred.

B. EXPERIENCE: Previous orderly or nurse aide experience preferred.

C. JOB KNOWLEDGE (Specific): Working knowledge of personal care activities, transfer techniques, CPR, traction set-up, post mortem care including legal boundaries for coroner care.

A knowledge of growth and development; specifically an understanding of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. An understanding of the range of treatment needed by patients of all ages in relation to the growth and development processes to include neonate, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.


BUDGET: Provides input for equipment budgets.

Physical Demands of the Job: Code 6/600 Response Team A. Training is provided to learn appropriate defensive postures, hold positions and

restraining techniques. Involvement is not done alone, always with a team. B. During the time of individual contact in a Code 6/600 Response the following may be

required: 1) Moderate to maximum resistance for holding, lifting or pushing 2) Forward reaching 3) Downward bending 4) Carrying may be required at times, but is done with assistance from other

responders 5) Weight lifted and moved varies depending on the size of the individual. 6) Minimal reaching above the head


PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE JOB: Fair working conditions with frequent exposure to disagreeable elements and danger.


EQUIPMENT OR MACHINES USED ON THE JOB: Scales, traction equipment, carts, wheelchairs, various medical supplies, O2 tanks, computer, copy machine, etc.

A. JUDGEMENT AND INITIATIVE: Requires some alertness while performing repetitious tasks according to directions. Requires independent time management to complete task outcome with interruptions.

B. INDEPENDENT ACTION: Work involves a variety of duties that are performed according to procedures but requires alertness to identify needed changes, must prioritize work requests and manage multiple demands.

C. EFFECT OF ERROR: Potential serious patient harm.

D. CONTACT WITH OTHERS: Public, patients, nursing staff, physicians, all hospital department staff.


PRINCIPAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES, TASKS, AND AUTHORITIES:

A. RESPONSIBILITY: Patient Treatment Activities

TASKS:

1. Performs routine treatment procedures as directed.

2. Assists Staff Nurse in complicated treatment procedures.

3. Maintains traction supplies including traction cart every shift.

4. Completes all equipment set up as directed.

TASKS:

3. Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of patient.

4. Communicates any patient complaints of pain to patient=s nurse, charge nurse or unit coordinator.

3. Assists in and, as necessary, accompanies patient in the admission, transfer and discharge procedures.

4. Provides and/or assists with personal care as necessary (i.e. baths, dressing of patient, personal hygiene, etc.)

5. Assists with patient care, such as positioning patient, lifting and turning patient with proper body mechanics, applying/utilizing special equipment as necessary and ambulating the patient as directed.

6. Under supervision, performs general care activities for patients in isolation.

7. Provides post-mortem care and transports body to the morgue.

TASKS:

1. Transports patients to and from various areas including helipad and PACU as necessary.

2. Provides transport assistance to other departments as schedule allows.

3. Collects specimens and transports same to proper areas as requested.

4. Transports requisitions, checks out supplies, and pulls medical records as directed.

5. Reports to all Code pages. Responsible for chest compressions during code

resuscitation and hands-on interaction with aggressive patients in code 6/600 situations. Provides other assistance as directed.

6. Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment by reporting equipment that is out of order, reporting other problems to management, cleaning equipment, as assigned, and preparing same for disinfection. Maintains knowledge and skill around appropriate equipment and supply usage.

7. Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors and other hospital personnel, while assuring confidentiality of patient information.

8. Attends in service education programs, as assigned, to maintain and learn new treatments, procedures, developmental skills, etc., for competency, including CPR and all potential Code situations.

9. Other duties as assigned.

1. Monitor and stock IV trays, traction room and cart on nursing units.

2. Locate supplies and equipment during off hours.

3. Assist OR orderly for breaks as necessary. .

4. Other duties as assigned.
