JOB SUMMARY

Uses equipment to collect samples of blood and other fluids from patients; explains procedures to patients and collects information from them in a professional manner. Collects and manages samples of blood and specimens from patients; ensures patient safety during the sample collection process. Records and documents patient information accurately. Follows all standard procedures and safety regulations; deploys asepsis techniques during phlebotomy procedures. Communicates with patients, collecting their health information and answering their questions regarding phlebotomy procedures.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Adheres to established internal standards and procedures abstracted from Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Follows pre-established patient safety guidelines. Identifies quality and safety issues regarding medical specimen collection and processing. Identifies standards and procedures associated with medical specimen collection and processing. Listens and responds to safety inquiries from the patient and/or family. Maintains cleanliness or sterilization of self and objects in order to prevent infections. Participates in collecting and processing specimens (e.g. blood) according to test requests. Understands the importance of documenting patient health information.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

This is a full time position of 80 hours per two week pay period working variable hours between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of a formal phlebotomy program, phlebotomy experience, and experience in a laboratory-related field preferred. May be required to have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. High school diploma or General Educational Development Diploma (GED) required.
