JOB SUMMARY

Must possess the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients in non-emergency and in life-threatening emergencies. Perform interventions with equipment typically found on an ambulance. Responsible for the delivery of emergency patient care. Competent in trauma and medical situations, both pre-hospital and in the clinical setting. Possess a basic knowledge and the necessary skills to provide lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response and may need to assist additional EMS Responders at the scene and/or during transport.In an Ambulance setting, EMTs drive mobile intensive care units to a specified location, following instructions from emergency medical dispatcher. Respond to emergency calls, administer first aid treatment or life support care in prehospital settings. Obtain patients medical history and vital statistics. Assess the nature and extent of illness or injury to establish and prioritize the patients for emergency needs and treatment procedures during transportation. Utilize necessary medical equipment to treat patients and ascertain the extent of their injuries or illness. Communicate with dispatchers or treatment center personnel to provide situational information, to arrange transfer of patients, report patient information to medical staff in a timely and accurate manner or to receive instructions for further treatment. Ensures cleanliness and orderly condition of the ambulance. After each call, restock and replace used linens, blankets and other supplies, clean all equipment following appropriate disinfecting procedures, check of all equipment to ensure ambulance readiness. Physical activities may include considerable use of arms and legs and moving of whole body; such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling materials.Successful completion of state approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Services Education Standards. Attend continuing education and training classes to maintain current certifications and/or licensure. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.In a Hospital based setting, EMTs under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) assist in performing patient care services and support activities of the patient care unit. Demonstrate an understanding of the Emergency Department (ED) flow and anticipate work flow. Multi-skilled in order to provide expanded bedside services. Knowledgeable of and utilize appropriate age-related patient care protocols relating to the physical and psychological needs of all ages of patients. Interact with patients to build rapport or provide emotional support. Work with growth and development needs of a diverse population. Observe, record and report to physician the patient's vital signs, measures input and output; collect non-invasive specimens; perform simple diagnostic tests and obtains urine specimens and record all data collected in the medical record. Responsible for preparing equipment during basic examinations, diagnostic procedures and treatments using aseptic techniques. Knowledge of medical terminology and medical equipment/supplies and helps maintain equipment, orders supplies and cleans and restocks the treatment areas. Ability to safely assist with the transfer of patients. Communicate directly with physicians, nursing staff, patients and patient families and responsible to report changes in the patients condition. Knowledge and ability to perform high-quality Basic Life Support (BLS) and ability to apply and use a Lund University Cardiac Assist System (LUCAS) chest compression device. Prepare and position stable patients during transport.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Looks for and considers non-verbal cues from individuals and groups. Uses fact-finding techniques and diagnostic tools to identify problems. Administers appropriate first aid and follows emergency procedures. Measures vital signs and conducts basic diagnostic tests; offers preliminary diagnoses. Pursues development opportunities consistent with career objectives. Asks questions to validate the understanding of the subject matter. Performs at least 2-3 concurrent activities without reducing productivity. Assists in documentation of medical histories, symptoms, and vital signs for assigned patients. Builds a rapport with the patient and explains the condition and course of action effectively. Observes skill practice; offers constructive feedback.

QUALIFICATIONS

BLS certification is required and depending upon location, national registry status as an EMT level may be required. Depending on state requirements, individuals may need to have a state license. NIMS ICS100,200, and 700 completed, and continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation. Additional training provided/workshops/ or staff meetings are to be attended as per policy.Must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record. Must be 18 years or older, approval needed for those under 21 to drive. May not be required for those in a Hospital setting. High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of an accredited Training Program required for licensing. Must have a thorough knowledge of EMT principles, practices and techniques, knowledge of how various equipment such as a monitor or defibrillator work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.
