Job Title:                  Assistant Building and Grounds Director                       

Reports To:             Building and Grounds Director

FLSA Status:           Salaried/Exempt

Summary (Brief description summarizing the overall purpose and objectives of the position)

  • Direct grounds staff, assist in supervision of maintenance and custodial staff, and assist the building and grounds director in overseeing the upkeep of all district facilities and properties

Essential Functions (Typical tasks but not all inclusive—major duties of the position)

  • Regularly inspect buildings and grounds to determine maintenance and repair needs
  • Assist the overseeing of all maintenance activities
  • Assist the overseeing of the cleaning of the facilities
  • Help manage the regulation of energy, heating, and lighting in all buildings
  • Help maintain up-to-date records of repairs, equipment purchases, and maintenance schedules
  • Assist in making recommendations on equipment purchases and help secure the appropriate bids to ensure the best delivery of service at the most competitive price
  • Assist in the coordination of the training of all custodial staff
  • Assist in the coordination of the scheduling of custodial staff
  • Assist in inspecting and maintaining all systems, including fire alarms and security systems
  • Coordinate and supervise the maintenance of all district grounds
  • Coordinate and oversee snow removal
  • Help ensure that the district is in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the district’s buildings and grounds
  • Work with the buildings and grounds director, superintendent and business manager on the development and administration of the operational budget for all buildings and grounds
  • Assist in the planning of summer and long-term building and maintenance projects
  • Act as project coordinator when designated by buildings and grounds director
  • Help keep the business manager and superintendent informed of the events, operations, and other issues related to the district’s buildings and grounds
  • Attendance is an essential element for this position due to direct support for students
  • Perform other duties as necessary and assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Minimum competencies for job performance)

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices related to the maintenance of buildings and grounds
  • Considerable knowledge of heating and cooling systems (HVAC)
  • Working knowledge of building security system hardware and software
  • Ability to oversee budgets
  • Ability to research and solve technical problems
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with teachers, administrators, board members, students, parents/patrons, and other professionals
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships with students , teachers, administrators, board members, parents/patrons, community members, and other professionals
  • Ability to handle a variety of assignments or problems independently
  • Ability to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment toward the job and mission of the school district

Education and Experience (Minimum level of education and experience required)

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Experience in custodial management and/or facility management preferred
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a job-related field

Licenses, Certificates, and Registrations (Minimum required to perform the job)

  • 1st Class C license required or the ability to obtain in a timely manner

Supervision (Level of supervision received and supervision exercised/size of group supervised)

  • Work is performed under limited supervision of the buildings and grounds director
  • Direct supervisory responsibility of all grounds staff
  • Direct supervisory responsibility of maintenance and custodial staff when buildings and grounds director is absent or attending meetings
  • Assist in the supervisory responsibility of maintenance and custodial staff
  • Assist in the responsibility for the supervision of all buildings and grounds in the district

Working Conditions (Physical requirements and environmental conditions)

  • Some travel and travel between buildings  may be required
  • Work may require long hours including early morning, evening, and weekend activities
  • Must be able to work safely in an environment containing caustic chemicals, cleaning materials, dust, and noise
  • Routinely required to work under inclement weather conditions
  • This is non-sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to and exceeding 50 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires stooping, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information through normal spoken word; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, inspections involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions and may be exposed to blood borne pathogens
